My reliable old 4108 has direct cooling. This means there's a metal water pipe (copper I think) that runs directly over the top of the large oil filter (later canister type). The two sometimes meet, and engine vibration causes the filter to wear through.

Is it safe to use the shorter type of oil filter?

If so, anyone know the part number please?

Thanks

PS Its a LOWLINE engine

I've used both long and short canisters over the years, depending on availability, never had any problem with the short ones on my 4108.

If you do a lot of hours between changes then its no, but saily boats don't generally do high engine hours.

I have a 4.108 lowline with indirect cooling and there is also a copper pipe running above the oil filter from the raw water pump to the water/oil heat exchanger. Along the pipe there are four 45 degrees bends (something like a crankshaft) therefore leaving the necessary room for the filter. If your pipe if straight as your post seems to suggest, the modification should be quite easy.

My 4108 fresh water cooled lowline marinised by Duffields had copper pipes to the TMP hydraulic box
