Hello Folks

My venerable (mid-80s) Perkins 4108 is starting to feel a little tired, drinking oil, smoking a bit, dripping, etc.

I have been offered a reconditioned 1985, same model (just drop in a motor away....) for around £2500 (actually NZ$7000 as we have just arrived in NZ). No expense spared on the work I have been assured. This seems a little high to me, what is a fair price for one of these dinosaurs these days?

Anyone posting, please include a Perkins 6.354 in your research. Mine smokes only on starting, black only at full chat, uses 1 ltre oil ev 15 hrs, diesel <8 ltre/ hour at 10 knots . . . built 1965.
Should I complain?

Sold a mid 80's Perkins 4.108 with 180hrs on the clock, a couple of years ago for 2500 Euro's. Not a difficult lump to get parts for or to repair /re-build, tho that might just be the case in the U.K. Still a lot of them about!

Go on the net and get a price for all the parts you need for a rebuild, add an engineer's wages, and total up the cost, I did my 2 myself.

PS, and don't forget the special tools you will need.

If it a genuine as new recon job then 2.5k may be high but possibly good value. I think that 4108 spares are still readilly available and not too pricy.
My problem has been with the externals, heat exchangers, flanges etc not made by Perkins and not always stocked.
Good luck.

Not too bad for a 20 year old genuine factory reconditioned 4108 with a 3-mth warranty. Good if it comes with a transmission.

They all drip oil, don't hope to get away from that one.

I had similar problemswith a 6354. Cured most of them. Firstly stopped using modern oil and started with Morris Agricultural which has no cleaning addatives. Added a gallon of de-glazer to the fuel. Ran the engine more often. Now back to 6.3 ltr /hr with only a little smoke on startup. Don't run 'at full chat' as no advantage in speed after 1700. Best speed /rpm for us is 1400.
