Perkins 4108 Injectors

take them out get them serviced, its cheap enough Colchester fuel injection will do it by return post.
4108 tick over is 700 - 800 revs, this gives a nice smooth glide for marina movements when gear engaged.
changing injectors is easy, just have handy a good large screwdriver for leverage, they are usually rusted/gunged in.

It was just a preventative measure - the engine runs as smoothly and quietly as you can expect the trusty 4108 to do.

To the OMG brigade, here's quote from the sellers: http://www.parts4engines.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=39&products_id=457

The nozzle is the only wearing part of the injector and with new injectors becoming prohibitively expensive, the alternative option of reconditioning your existing injectors by fitting a new set of nozzles is a realistic and cost effective option. The only tools you will need are a bench vice and a 22mm ring spanner!
To finish the job off properly, you are going to need to replace the injector sealing copper washer, so we include a set of four with the kit.
there are no scare stories.

Man on the moon, OMG!!, You want to climb Everest, OMG, You're going to the North Pole, OMG. The OMG lot would still be living in caves, too scared to take the slightest risk.

What's the worst that can happen with a diy nozzle change - the engine runs a bit rough, but we're talking about a 4108, not a Rolls Royce . Get real.

Looks like I learned nothing in the 1000+ diesel engines I have reconditioned to date.

I bow to your superior knowledge and experience. Many of my employers have thrown many thousands of pounds down the drain investing in training, time and equipment to service injectors it seems. Poor fools. A 22mm spanner is all they required all along. Maybe I should resign and you take over the running of the engine shop?

To everyone else...don't try it. Unless you are lucky at games of chance, you could have a poor running motor at best or a dead one.

End of my input as this line of thinking is not worthy of any more effort.

Apologies if I seem abrupt but I have a serious hangover.

Ian99 that is dangerous **** that if followed by the majority of owners will destroy their motors. Delete your post if you have any conscience.

Please could you explain how a badly rebuilt injector will fail and prove fatal to the engine. Is it possible for the injector to flood the cylinder and cause it to break conrods etc?

Fuel wash
Clogged exhaust /turbos
damaged turbos
overheating
injector pipe spall
fuel erosion
oil contamination
dropped combustion chamber caps
burned exhaust valves
nozzle erosion
pump cam plate/ camshaft damage

Springs to mind without any thought at all.

And before anyone says that some 40 year old ditch pump yacht engine has no turbo, more than yachties read this thread.

Really is the end of my input now and my hangover is getting worse along with my demeanour. :)
