Hi Guys,
Just a quick question regarding the Perkins 4107 engine. A boat that I'm thinking of buying has 2 of these engines on Enfield outdrives. Do I need Metric or AF tools (I'm guessing the latter).

Thanks
Malc

There's loads on the web about 4-107s and 4-108s. They are an old style, basic engine that sold in their thousands around the world in every sort of application.

If you grow to be 'at one' with your engines, they will serve you till the day you die.
If you don't develop empathy with them, you will think they are the very spawn of the devil.
Successful 4-107 owners are a certain breed. The buying decision is really "are you one of them?"

I like the idea of them being a "basic engine". This is the sort of technology that I can deal with. I'm quite happy to put a bit of love and attention their way, in return for reliable service. After all.... that is part of what boating is all about ;)

I have been told that the basic difference between the two engines is that the 4107 has wet liners fitted, which are prone to corrosion, unless the engine is fitted with a closed cooling sysstem with a heat exchanger to keep salt water away from the liners. It might just be worth a look before you proceed.

I had two in a Senior 31. One broke two crankshafts in a fortnight. The heads cracked on both and the wet liners corroded through. Nasty things and don't even consider buying if they are raw water cooled. Also known for throwing con rods through the block as were the later 4108s. When the ends of the pump drives inside the timing case break off make sure that when you replace them they are tight up against the drive dog. Enfield drives are so easy to look after that they are not a problem and will offer years and years of good service. Best of luck because you'll probably buy the boat if you like it regardless of the engines.

Said with feeling ;)

I saw one run away 3 weeks ago, small split in the fuel pump diaphragm, slowly filled the sump with diesel until... vroooooooooom! Lots of smoke!!!

Fuel isolated at the tank... 2 mins later all was well and it stopped. New pump and all is now well.

Basic, noisy but fairly bullet proof. (Just watch out for the liners - but that is only a good DIY project!!)

Now the legs..... I think you will find Bob Knowles will become your best friend.
