Good afternoon,
What tools do I need to go behind the impeller and cure my dripping raw water pumps? I'm sure I read about a ceramic disc being the problem. Is there a place that sells reconditioning kits and should I be looking for a number stamped somewhere?
I have a pair of 1970 Perkins 4107's.

Any advice would be appreciated.:)
 
There is normally a pair of conventional lip seals on the shaft behind the impeller. In some pump designs there is a plate that retains the upper seal, which can be removed after the cam is removed. Both of these are held in with ordinary set screws. In others there is nothing, the seal is simply pulled out. Lots of info about water pumps on my website.

The ceramic seal is normally specific to circulation pumps on indirectly cooled engines and cars.
 
Unlikely to be ceramic discs. Dripping from the pump is usually failure of the shaft seals and there is a hole in the housing where the water drips to indicate the seal is failing. on some pumps that are belt driven there is just one seal from the seawater side, but if the pump is shaft or gear driven from the engine there is usually one seal to keep the oil on the engine side and one for the seawater side.
 
There are no ceramic discs in these pumps, if it pumps ok it only needs new seals which are a standard size and are available at any bearing and seal supplier at a fraction of marine suppliers cost.

Be careful not to damage the shaft as it is not hardened and quite soft..(No hammering the shaft out, use a puller).
 
Thanks for your replies, it's shaft driven and the leak is as described by tranona. I'll do the impellers at the same time so thanks for the link dunmor:encouragement:

I've taken the pump off and pressed out the shaft. I can see the seal I need to replace, but how on earth do I get to it? If the plate at the back is meant to come off, it doesn't want to and I'm worried about bending it.

Once you have removed the cam the plate will come out. It is a very tight fit but is thick enough that you won't bend it. Try making up a hook to pull the centre, or otherwise tap lightly from behind using a thin rod as a drift
 
Thankyou so much! I can see that they're simple bits of kit, but I always find the first time a challenge.
Plate out and new seal in. I'm very grateful for your help.
 
You should check that the shaft is still in good order where the lip seal is in contact. If not, sooner or later replacement is advised. Reassembling, fill the inner part of the lip seal, where the small spring is, with good water resistant grease.
