Perkins 4107 Engine \'issues\'

Recently re-commissioned boat after a 2 year lay-up. Engine run for about 6 hours on a shake-down 'cruise'. Next day, grey smoke when engine started, but ticked-over ok. Now won't turn over, watery emulsion in oil and oily watery sludge over valve springs and inside rocker box cover.

Head gasket problem - or worse? Your thoughts would be welcome.

Before you rip the head off look elswhere and see what can be eliminated.

Water can get into the oil via oil coolers and engine mounted water pumps.

Try removing the injectors and spinning the engine. Do any water droplets come out, this may give a clue.

Is there a ventted loop fitted as with the long layup the vent valve may have salted up and allowed water to syphon into the engine when you stopped after the first run.

Got 2 Of These Engines, You,ll Find It Is The Head Gasket, Its A Very Easy Job To Do, Worth Lapping The Valves While Its Off, Did Mine In A Day!

the perkins 4.107 has wet liners,I would almost guarantee you have a pinhole in the liner, the only cure is to replace the liners. I personally would go for a short motor. I used to have a 32' twin diesel (4.107) power boat, both engines had to be repaired due to electrosis picking holes in the liner

Thank you. I'm hoping it's not that! Head removal in situ is not such a big problem. The liners would be something else. Boats eh, who'd have 'em?

Thanks for that tip. Further exploration this afternoon has revealed:

Water in the oil BUT no oil in the water. I've drained the cooling water and it was as clear as a mountain spring.

Slight leak from the back of the sea water pump (which I've now removed for further investigation)

Also, someone has suggested the possibility of a corroded sump and water ingress from the bilges. Can't feel anything obvious, but I guess it wouldn't need to be a very big hole!

Further thoughts would bemost welcomed by me.
