I would like to use a paint as close as possible to the original (Perkins 4.108M made in year 1977). Is there any particular code I could refer to? Any particular manufacturer?

Newer Perkins are blue (see for example the Plastimo 18323 "Perkins bleu" - French! - which is meant to be from 1983 onward) but my engine looks more like "hammered green".
I am pretty sure that Perkins itself does not have records on the original colour; just consider that they have no records on the Part Number coding of the engines produced in those years!
Based on my own direct experience with a Perkins agent.

A sort of rusty silver, with bits of blue......Well mine was, and it NEVER went wrong in 9 years...!

I found hammerite 'mid green' to be an acceptable match. Unfortunately I didn't get smooth, but even the hammered finish isn't easily noticed by a blind man on the top deck of a passing bus...

Mine was black when I got the boat.

Got it re conditioned and painted red so I could see the oil leaks ( one from the rocker gasket and one from the oil change pump. Both leaks were tiny so I left well alone.

A Superb engine. Never let me down in 15 years- apart from the drive plate disintegrating one fine day- but that's not really the engine.

All paints rerer to BS4800 or RAL code. Green for example starts with RAL 6000 ( Patina Green) and finishes with RAL 6034 (Pastel Turquoise), Blue paint shades start with RAL 5000 (Violet Blue) and ends with RAL 5024 (Patel blue)
Perhaps you can get hold of a suitable colour chart from you local paint supplier and match it with your engine colour.

I am closely following all your replies and I thank you all. I also received a reply outside of this forum saying that the 4.108 displayed in the enclosed picture was painted with "Hammerite light green".

I must confess that I am still puzzled on what to do. My first desire was to use the "true" original colour of a 1977 Perkins marine engine but I am starting to doubt about its feasibility because I cannot get an unique reply. It sounds as if its memory was indeed lost, I am afraid.
Now, as 4th owner, I cannot even be certain that my engine has got its original colour which could be defined by something close to Cariadco's "rusty silver...".
Among other things, the latter colour would be rather difficult to be replicated without a more precise reference.
I will wait more replies on this forum and even follow Leonidas' advice but at the end I reckon I may have to start a new "1977 Perkins marine engine colour rule": what about something like purple with yellow polka dots????
:)

You could always phone perkins in Peterborough, they will have reference info for you, may even supply the paint. They were very helpful when I had a query a few years ago.

I worked in the finished engine bay at Perkins at that time and they were always a light metallic blue.

Precious information indeed! Would you suggest that it is close to the color displayed in the pictures of Macnorton or my own (the one defined "Hammerite light green" which also looks like a sort of blue-green)?

Your experience is probably more useful than a call to Peterborough!
