No not what we all strive for but that stuff International flog in two tins. Why, oh why is it, that when mixing (3 to 1) however accurately you measure this out ( and I use syringes) you always end up with a fair quantity of varnish and no catalist left!!!! Is it just me or what?

Caution: Don't go to sea without a boat.

Hi ajc!

I have exactly the oppposite problem - always seem to have some of the catalyst left!! Incidentally, the latest Perfection paint (released a few days ago) has a 2:1 ratio so I expected it would make things easier. But it didn't!! STILL have some catalyst left after using the first tin. Bu*ger eh? Still goes off rock hard though and has a really fabulous finish.

Cheers

I've not used the 2-pack Perfection paints before - any good? I'm about to totally repaint & revarnish and looking to use the best I can afford.
Is it true you have to use same-brand primer, undercoat & gloss?
Is it just for above the waterline?
What goes underneath the antifouling?

Regard any paint or finishing medium as a system, not just an individual product. If you want to use Blodgett's Superior Gloss Paint, then also use Blodgett's Free-sanding Undercoat over Blodgett's Primer. The paint chemists work hard at getting their products compatible with each other, not compatible with their opposition's paint! If you go mixing brands through the whole process, you could be giving yourself problems that you could do without.
There is a proper primer to go under antifouling, usually grey. I've only come across the International variety, which they call Universal Primer. Other manufacturers will have equivalent products.

Hi Tim,

I checked with International re the undercoat and, as expected, they would only recommend their own. Having said that, it does make sense to use the same brand as any problems over compatibility are removed, and I reckon there's enough to worry about on a big paint job without adding to it!!

The new Perfection is really excellent, easy to apply and with a very high gloss. I've just painted my cockpit and am preparing the coachroof prior to doing that at the moment. The good news is that the 'old' 2 pack Perfection undercoat is compatible with the latest 2:1 mix Topcoat which is, like the earlier version, not for use below water.

You will have to use a two part epoxy paint below the waterline, and the most popular are made by Blakes and International. Check out their brochures or websites to get the details. Having prepared the hull, I am waiting for the surveyor's 'thunbs up' before applying the recommended number of coats of Blakes Gelprotect as an osmosis treatment.

Hope this helps

Jerry
