Back in the early 1970 Colin Mudie designed a 30 foot yacht that was specified by its owner for ocean sailing as well as exploration and investigation.On its 30 foot it had a clipper bow a an american coaster stern with davits.On deck it had a small cockpit and a four square fishin boat style wheelhouse with proper windows that could be loweredwith a leather sash as per fishing boats.The rig was bermudian cutter.Anybody remmember or got some pics?

Was it a one off or were a number made?
I've got a boaty catalogue from the 70's and it could be in that, but I would need more information to pin it down

My memory faulty...The yacht was called GANG WARILY and was designed byJ francis Jones for Maldwin Drummond...a one off bult by Whistocks on the est coast.I went up yje loft and founf it in an old Yachting World annual 1973.Cant do pics how ever hard I try to remmeber the instructions.....anyway great little yacht with character and function!
 
Coincidently there is a Nantucket Clipper moored on Oulton Broad right now. She's had those tacky embellishments removed off her stem and looks better for it. Certainly not an ugly boat, darn sight more attractive than many modern boats. Probably built as a 'character' boat, a product of its time. Got to say that I have read and heard very good reports about the sailing ability of the Clipper.

Alan Buchanan designed the Nantucket Clipper not Colin Mudie, not sure you could consider that back end an 'American coaster stern' and fitting davits at the back end of one of those i would magine woul make it an absolute nightmare cats cradle of metal.

I have seen Images of William Garden Designed boats with the layout you mention. But not sure i have seen one at 30'. There was one on the River Dart for years called 'Pertelote' registered in Kirkwall. She had a four square cabin top with sash windows, cliper bow and american stern and davits but would have been about 35'.

I have a lovely book called The Yachtman's Naturalist by Drummond and Rodhouse. In it there is information on the 28 ft Darwin Class designed by Colin Mudie, with sketch drawings.
It is a centre cockpit sloop designed for expedition/naturalist work; specifically for use in the waters inside the Chiloe and Chronos archipeligo in southern Chile but also described as equally at home in the Norwegian and Swedish islands.
There is also a little bit on Gang Warily II, oened by one of the authors.

What's not to like?

Lustyd/SHUG...why, this particular hatred of the Nantucket Clipper's profile?

Is it the coachroof, without which her usefulness as a cruising boat would be virtually nil?

Or is it her GRP reproduction of a form that 'ought' to be wooden?

As with property ashore, granted beauty's all in the eye of the freeholder - but I'd gladly own one of these little yawls, despite the rig's reputed irrelevance.
 
Where is PERTELOTE ?

Seeing the name Pertelote come up, brought back many happy memories from when we owned her in the late 70s to early 80s where she was berthed in Lymington. We lived aboard with our 3 children who have never forgotten her and are always asking if we can find where she is.
Last Tuesday we spent a day in Dartmouth trying to find her but the last time she was seen was in a yard in Galmpton some years ago having a total refit. If anybody knows where she is now we would be most grateful if you could let us know.
Pertelote was a William Garden design built by the Clarke Bros at Cowes for the previous owner who sailed her in the Orkneys.
Her dimensions are 55ft LOA 45ft over the hull and 13.6 beam.
 
I remember the Pertelote. I was aboard her circa 1969 on the island of Sanday being shown round by a proud new owner. I was only 13 at the time and sticks in my mind that he was said to be a sheep farmer but that did not seem to ring true to me.
She made a lasting impression on me and I saw her several times entering and leaving Kirkwall harbour.
I next believe I saw her in Scrabster harbour circa 1977.
Have always been looking out for her again and wondered what her fate was as she would have been expensive to keep top notch.
Dreamed of owning her and living aboard.
Anybody heard anything of her since? Any pictures?
 
Nice to hear your memories of Pertelote, hope to hear her whereabouts now.
Maybe somebody else will respond! we do have photos of her whilst she was in our possession, but not sure how to send them to you on this site.Will try and find out how to do it and then post them on to you

I have now gathered all the information made available on this beautiful clipper bowed William Garden design.
Have cobbled together a bit of a web site for her and hope that there will be more information forthcoming to populate it further.

We used to call it the ' Antartic Kipper ' !

The Nantucket was pretty but dreadfully slow, robbed of progress by the clipper bow and raked stern meanig a short waterline, and the rig was less than powerful; the format might have been OK on a 100 footer...
