Went to Penton Hook Yacht Club earlier for a pint and it was shut.

Sign on the door: “Closed unit further notice”

What’s the story? Was quite a nice stop off for a beer and bit of food.

I believe the club has had to close because their contracted operators (catering etc) have pulled out. It's a watch this space situation that looks quite messy from the outside!

If I was a betting man, I'd be putting money on the contract rent and other operating costs being too high to make the club a viable proposition, just like so many pub tenancy/lease rents have caused pubs to shut.

Most "clubhouse bars/dining " establishments in boat clubs are vastly subsidised by the moorings.
All would close within days in the club treasuror decided they had to pay their way in the world and charged for rent/rates/ services.
Simply not enough peeps using it.
Usual story of too many folks just driving straight past on way to or back from boat ?

However more than likely some hopeful out there convinced he can make it a commercial proposition.................until the borrowed money runs out ?
Most new food outlets last less than 12 months.

Cafe and bar/restaurant owners assume that boat owners are all ' rich' and rolling in it. They soon discover the truth and realise that it's a myth. Just look at a Bray and Harleyford to see a high turnover in owners. The minority of boaters that do have plenty of spare cash would never set foot in that kind of establishment anyway. They'll be hopping in a cab back to Bray village or Marlow or Weybridge...
Nice enough clientele, but poor room with no atmosphere and mediocre food do not success make.

Clubhouse or Resturant ?

Not sure which bit of the market it was aimed at, having only ever seen it from the river.
Always assumed like most boat club outfits it was a bacon sarnie and tea outfit during the day and basic simple grub with a pint in evenings, somewhere to gather and moan about whats gone wrong with the boat and diss any other boaters not actually present, over pint.
Or was it a starters and puddings from £16.50 and a choice of wines that ensure there is no second bottle ?
Pretty certain it cannot sit on the fence, ie attract well heeled outsiders and appeal to those simply wanting a cooked breakfast nearbye that absolutely does not involve any washing up .

Midway through last year it got to get quite a clientele from the residents along the Reach with a variety of quiz's and Saturday night events with meals. The foot fall for its location must be rubbish though. Not my bag particularly and for a while it was bloody cliquey.

The main problem there, is the fact that the gates get locked , around 1800, thus excluding the general public, from any evening venues.
One of the previous tenants, thought he was going to turn the place into a Gastro Pub, until he found that out.
He left shortly thereafter.

Re: Clubhouse or Resturant ?

have come to believe that some sort of meeting/eating/drinking /greeting area does add to the social cohesion of any marina or club.
Unfortunately such places do have to be subsidised from elsewhere.
MDL Chatham, despite its many advantages, does lack this feature as does MDL PH.
At least at Chatham you have multiple food outlets within a (brisk)5 min walk.
Not sure how far you have to trek at PH for any sort of grub or consoling drink when something goes wrong on the boat.

Without the clubhouse not much choice and non in walking distance
The Twynersh at Chertsey roundabout bottom of A320 (best left alone)
The Red Lion in Thorpe not a bad pub food wholesome and not silly expensive but a good 2.5 mile from the marina.

Just and update and a family that has boat at Penton Hook have taken over the running of the club and are doing a great job.

It now has a warm and friendly atmosphere and whilst the food is basic pub grub the quality is superb.

Karen and Mick are doing a great job of keeping it going and there is a new feel to the yacht club aspect of it too.

Re: Penton Hook Yacht Club Open

Wish them luck. My ideal establisment will serve a basic breakfast, something available around mid day. Early eve meal would be great, no silly late opening hours needed as OG is in bed by 21.00 any who. Preferably licenced of course.
