Am looking to replace the alternator on my MD2040, as the existing unit has failed. The engine has the standard MD2040 pulley arrangement and I'm not wanting to change that. I have just under 600AHr Leoch AGM Lead Carbon batteries. After a couple of nights on the hook, running fridge & heater the batteries will easily swallow-up 70A for half an hour before they start reducing demand. I also have an ancient Sterling charge regulator fitted to the current alternator, which I have setup to give around 14.7V charge voltage for a couple of hours before dropping back to around 14.3V thereafter (the regulator is a simple timer circuit, with a high and low volts setting).

I'm wanting to up-rate the current capacity of the new alternator, as the 70A the batteried swallow is right at the limit of my existing alternator. I might also swap-out the old Sterling regulator for a newer digital version.

A quick search has found the alternator in the link below:-

UPRATED 12V 100 AMP VOLVO PENTA ALTERNATOR (AQ MD KAD TAMD)

Anyone have experience of this unit? What voltage does it throw out without an external regulator being added? I'm comfortable modifying the regulator on the alternator to accomodate the Sterling unit.

Any other off-the-shelf alternators that I should consider?

My boat is marina based and permanently on float charge via shorepower. We don't have an inverter at the moment, but I do intend to fit one when my 20 year old Fischer Panda eventually dies. We do normally stay at anchor when away from home (around 20 weekends a year), so I do want to be able to supply as much current as the betteries will take when we get underway. We also have a 2-3 week summer holiday where I'm on the hook for the majority of that time. No solar, so all charging is via alternator.

Thoughts/options?

Thanks.
