I recently posted a "wanted" message on the for sale board as I need a replacement rev counter sender for a Penta MD11C. I received a reply asking whether a Perkins unit would fit. Wondered if anyone knew whether a Perkins sender unit, or any other manufacturer's unit, would be suitable for the MD11C. Any help appreciated.
David.

Thanks everyone. Wow! Almost 150 quid for a big bolt with 2 wires hanging off it...! My existing sensor has failed because one of the spade connectors broke off. I think that I'll have a go with the soldering iron and see if it can be repaired (don't hold out much hope, though).

The VDO sensor in the earlier response to my post looks fairly similar. Anyone know whether it would be compatible with the Penta rev counter? I'll need to check the thread size as well.

If anyone is breaking/scrapping an old Penta MD, I would obviously be very happy to hear from you......!

the rev counter is will most likely be a VDO.

If you can post a pic of the back of the tacho I may be able to help.

The top sender in my post is a tacho generator type and the meter only has 2 connections with no sererate power at it is powered by the tacho generator.

The lower is used to drive the type of tacho that has 3 connections power, ground and signal. This type can also be driven from the W terminal from the alternator.

I have both types on my engine to drive different tacho's at the 2 steering stations

Hi - will try to get access to the rear of the tacho dial and note any information there. I've attached a photo showing the existing sender unit. On it is the writing:
VDO
9 80
804/712

It has (or rather had!) 2 spade connectors at the end, one of which has snapped off. Does this help identify the old part and whether either of the units in the earlier photos would suit?

Ta,
David.
