Penobscot ?

I am thinking about building a dinghy for my son and myself to go sailing and was struck by the lines of this Penobscot 14 footer:

Construction time sounds OK.

I like the lines, the stern shape and the bow Although I would like to rig it with a gaff, staysail and jib, well maybe exclude the staysail. Although, I'd probably end up with a bermuda rig.

I looked at this but it seems a little big :

Construction time of a year sounds a bit on the long side and a bit expensive.

comments any suggestions for other designs that I should consider?

Take a look through Duckworks - You'll find loads of designs and loads of photo build stories to give you an idea of what's involved. Be warned though - it's very addictive!
Also found them a great source of fittings etc.
No connection - just found lots of good reading and had great service from them when buying plans and hardware.

They both look very nice! I think you are right though, the 17 footer, will take a bit longer to build, and be more expensive.

Perhaps the Bajan Sailor, might be able to point you at something as well? worth asking him? Given your location?

[/ QUOTE ] I am in the Leeward Islands. Bajan Sailor is some 400 miles South East, and stuck a ways out in the Atlantic.

I am leaning to the 14 footer. Not sure of thhe rig most likely to end up being a bermudan rig.

There is a friendly boatyard here - http://www.indigoyachtsltd.com
The CEO David Saw (former Chief Designer at Camper and Nicholson Yachts) at the yard would be able to provide valuable assistance if, where and when necessary.

Re: Penobscot ?

That Penobscot 14 does look like a very fine vessel, and one that anybody would be proud to own and sail - and I am sure that you would have a lot of fun building her as well.

There are many other suppliers of small boat plans - Paul Fisher of www.selway-fisher.com comes to mind, also Fyne Boat kits at http://www.fyneboatkits.co.uk

I didnt realise you were in St Kitts - I was last there on a Fisheries workshop in 2001, when I had the pleasure of visiting Indigo Yachts and meeting David Saw. You will certainly have some very useful resources to tap into re his yard, equipment and expertise.

Re: Penobscot ?

Having looked at other reports, I am now tending towards a cutout kit and the 17 footer*.

Anyone had any experience building pre-cut kits?
