I've always had reasonable success with WD40 but have read on this forum that this is not really good for freeing bearings, shackles, blocks etc. What's the best stuff and where to get please.

Wake up in the back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is PLUS GAS....

WD 40 is NOT a penetrating oil but in this inclement weather it is great for
spraying on the HT leads etc when engines are affected by damp.

Plus Gas can be obtained from many sources including Amazon...

Google is your friend.

Here is another

Thanks Bilgediver - I must pay attention. Plus Gas - that's the stuff I was thinking of. Haven't seen it on the shelves recently. (later edit) I see it's now available in AEROSOL form so now I can easily use twice as much as I need.
Alha 22 - I hadn't got anything so ambitious as a steam roller in mind.

Penetrating oil

Basic mineral oil, diluted in diesel. It smells and drips but will penetrate rusty threads like a good 'un. It has the advantage that both ingredients are generally available on most boats.

Plus Gas, they do one with graphite in it too. That's the better one as the graphite platelets provide dry lubrication as well.

Edit, Do not get penetrating oil on engine oil seals or some engine mounts. It will make them fail.

My local engineering company gave me a can of what they use. Its called Penol made by Chemodex and was certainly very good. Plus Gas is fine also, but as said elsewhere WD40 isn't. WD stands for Water Displacement....its a big clue:D

Use either plain paraffin or dilute engine oil to 80% paraffin

Second that, cheapest and best option you will get.

WD 40 is OK but not great. Do NOT use it as suggested on the can for preventing rust, it will not work. It washes off in time with water leaving a squeeky clean surface which rusts beautifully and for that reason I believe it is banned on a lot of navy's ships. :o

Another vote for Plus Gas

WD 40 is a water displacing fluid.

Castrol DWF is also de-watering fluid but I've only ever seen it once ... when Castrol gave it away with cans of oil!

I also have couple of aerosol cans of something called "Yield" that I got from work years ago. NLA as far as I know but if you see it , get it. I reckon its even better than Plus Gas

Yes Plus Gas is what you are looking for. A recent experiment out of a handful of products showed WD40 was the worst for penenetration but then it was designed as a water repellent and not for penetration.

Once a product is known to all through heavy advertising then other products, though even better, just don't get a look in. The shops will stock what people ask for

It's a bit like Waxoyl & Dinitrol. Waxoyl is a substance that can slip down the side of metal not covering anything especially when applied in hot weather and it needs retreating as it says on the can every two years :( Dinitrol on the other hand is a thick black goo that has been used by car manufacturers for years (used to be called Supertrol!) and penetrates and stays on for life. I believe Waxoyl are now making a product that is similar to Dinitrol but it would be better to buy the original stuff.
