It's that time of year again when people insist on buying me Christmas presents so I thought I might ask for a Pela oil extractor. Does the 6l globe type come with a narrow enough diameter suction pipe that will fit down the fairly narrow dipstick hole on a Yanmar 2gm20?

Dont get the Pela - the pump on the top is only a press fit so comes off most irritatingly when you try to operate it single handed as sometimes you must ( sucking oil out of bilges, water out of sumps etc). There is an alternative given the best buy recommendation by a recent mag test and on which the pump screws into the reservoir.

No probs with the size of the dipstick.

On my GM20 I pull off the final narrow section of the tube because it is so narrow it makes the job take too long.

The fact that the pump is not secured to the Pela is not really a problem - you just use one hand to hold the tube in position, another hand to pump and another to hold the pump onto the body. Alternatively, if you are a cheap model only equipped with two hands, use them to hold things in place, take the pump handle in your teeth and keep nodding.

Well, unless the unit weights several kilos, you are going to have to hold it somehow or of course it will lift off the ground when you pump "up"?

I have this one. Much better than the globe types - two thickness of pipe so will definitley fit

Also used for sucking water from awkward bilges etc. - Invaluable

Get yerself a Beta, built in pump and amazingly, it works! Not really an option I know, but if you are concerned about tube sizes, give me a pm and I'm sure I can sort you out with something that'll fit, there are certain advantages to working in an operating theatre, various guages (sp?) of tubing being one of the least.

This to the OP, of course................although anyone in need of tubing etc feel free to pm me.

The Pela oil pipe looks suspiciously like the outer covering of a pushbike brake cable (coiled metal interior & plastic coated) - if you happen to have an old brake cable outer to hand then I would see if it fits down your dipstick tube.

Thanks for the kind offer but now after reading some of the reports I might stick with my old brass suction pump. I thought the Pela might make things easier but after reading I'm not so sure.
I quite fancy a large Musto Carryall instead.

The Pela works really well.I have just bought a new one as my ten year old one has started to loose suction around the seal but still good with water. The secret is to have the oil in the engine hot.I run the engine for about half an hour charging the batteries and the oil is sucked out no problem.

It does make things easier and is a very useful bit of kit. I simply suggest you guy the other brans.

Agree with Ditchcrawler get the engine oil hot first.
The Pela pump is one of the best things I have bought for the boat and no complaints about it even after six years use.

I have the Seago version of the Pela (as sold in Duncan's) and have found it MUCH better than the old brass pumps. No more burning your hands on the hot oil or getting the stuff sprayed over your hands from the leaking top gland.

The tube into the dip-stick hole looked to me more like plastic covered expanding curtain rod (the stuff you put through the top of net curtains) than Bowden cable tubing. It has a tendency to get blocked, especially if you are using it to suck the last of the water from the bilge or the anchor locker and to clear it, you stretch it a wee bit. I would measure the diameter for you but it is at the boat and I am on the wrong side of the hills if the forecast snow arrives.

They have lots of uses and I keep mine handy on board all year. I even used it to suck the fuel out of the fuel tank last year before renewing the valve at the tank. It took a little time and patience to get over 40 litres out with the 6 litre capacity of the unit.
