Pedro 12 volt lighting DULL!

Hi guys and girls.
Is there any way to improve the dreary bulbs in our overhead 12 volt light fittings, Pedro, 1990, without changing the fittings themselves? They have a dome shaped plastic cover

Not quite the same problem as you but we found our overhead lights a bit stark so we now us a couple of table top lamps (admitedly 240v) which sit nicely behind the setee. They create a nice atmostphere.
These are similar although ours are about 8 inches dia:

In my 1990 Pedro I bought an inverter and installed mains sockets either side of settee and used table lamps with energy saving 11watt bulbs,in fact my later boat is done this way..The latest have halogen in the roof but cannot remember whether your type would stand the heat or not.I have been thinking of fitting led,s instead of halogen.they should be available to fit your fittings.

Forgot to mention I fitted a double pole change over switch to the sockets so they can be run off mains or inverter.

Check the plastic covers. Over the years they have probably lost their translucency and therefore are not reflecting the light. T cut or something similar may help. Of course it may also be a bad earth or other poor electrical problem. Geoff

I'll have a look at led's. I have lamps plugged into the mains but wanted to improve the brightness of the overheads when away from the mooring.
