Hi,

My family PC is used at various times during the day by the family and can be turned on/off as many as 12 times.
Is it less damaging to the hardware to leave it in standby/sleepmode, provided that whilst in standby mode my software is well protected from viruses etc.?

I am ignoring the recent spurious stuff about saving the planet by not using standby on any electrical appliances.

Standby is better, as long as you shut it down at the end of the day: as the PC shuts down, it clears up caches and temporary files. Keeping it on standby will after a while slow down the computer considerably.

I'd agree with that. Sometimes, even after being on most of the day it can get a bit cranky and benefit from a restart. But there again sometimes I convert a load of pics from Raw to Tiff and clean them up which uses massive amounts of processing and scratch disc (temporary memory on the hard drive).

Yup. Been 2 years since I went over to Macs- the darker side !..Both the lappy and the Imac sleep when they get ignored but are only restarted for software upgrades...
And in conjunction with a Wacom tablet instead of a mouse I cannot believe how I seem to just fly through all the work-and fun-stuff I do on them..

Apologies for drifting this thread but I was sitting here drinking coffee, pondering the loss of West Wing and wondering why it's taking soooo long to get through my work.

Do you think the lack of a Wacom is slowing me down?

I know they're usually targetted towards artistic designers & photographers but I also dabble in the field of creative arts - you should see these accounts I'm working on at the mo /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We have PC's that stay on for weeks at a time, less stress on the hardware. The screens are set to go to sleep, but not the PC's.

Agree that some pgms hog memory and so a reboot is needed, but if it seems to be running OK just leave it on.

Started with Macs and I still have a Powermac but it won't run the latest versions of most programs. I use pc for other businessy things and so it's the one that got updated.
As Photoshop moved toward a Mac-style interface on the PC it's not too great a problem, except there is not the same lightness of touch on a pc mouse as there is on a Mac.
Try creating complex paths with a pc and your mouse hand gets RSI.
A Wacom tablet could be the answer.

So what about ADSL router(s)? What's the guff about shutting them down at night together with the PC?

Dynamic IP address vs static IP address? What happens to the ADSLMax BRAS profile and Max Stable Rate due to switch-off?

Do I need another forum.......? Do I need to get a life......?

You can turn the router off with no problems. If your ISP have assigned you a static IP it won't make any difference, if not, just the same as a dial up modem, you get a new IP address each time, and makes no difference unless you need the static IP address for a web server or similar, in which case you need to obtain a static IP address anyway.

Bras adsl max, better to turn router off regularly if you want highest connection speed, particularly if you are transiting from 1Mb to 8Mb as many are this summer.

mirrors the advice from my ISP about the transition, which is that turning the router off regularly will help 'train' the new connection
