paying to anchor, not bl**dy likely

I think most yotties object to paying to lie to their own ground tackle. So here is a cunning plan..........

next time you are approached by an official demanding money for the privilege of using your own ground tackle ask him to sign a document based on the following:

I......................hereby declare that the anchoring area being charged for is good holding ground and free from obstructions. I further declare that the landing facilities I am providing are in good order and safe.


signed..............................date........................


In all other areas if one provides goods or services they must be fit for purpose so asking for the above assurance doesnt seem unreasonable.
With luck it should be enough convince said official, who probably hates asking anyway, not to bother with you.

What does this learned forum think?

I agree with you on this. Paying for use of own ground tackle is a bl**dy imposition. I will not go to Beaulieau anymore because of this, and if more people took the same attitude their business would soon disappear.

Trouble is, in many crowded places they are actively trying to discourage anchoring, even if there are no alternative facilities. So they'd have no problems about sending you packing. (See the thread on Fowey a little while back).

In the case of the Beaulieu it is the owner of the river bed. The Beaulieu River is, I believe, the only privately owned river in England.

I own part of the River Thames that is the width of my land to the middle of the River. It shows clearly on my deeds etc. I am known as a "Riparian Owner". I own the river bed and it is my responsibility to have it dredged, repair the banks etc. As I do not however own the water that flows over my part of the river bed, that is the NRA. If I stick a post in the river bed outside my house the NRA charge me for a licence as I am obstructing the water flow. This post now has me thinking of charging for anchoring??

My apologies. I had been led to believe that the Beaulieu was unique in this way, following some ancient charter (King John?), which gave the river bed to Lord Montagu's decendents in reward for providing troops to fight France.

Please forgive any historical inaccuracies, but I can't quite remember thgat far back!

I think the distinction is that the Beaulieu River is the only tidal (or estuarial, or something) bit of river in the UK that is privately owned. Everything else in the UK below MHWS belongs to her Maj.

They do indeed, and I think it's probably questionable, from a legal point of view, whether or not they have the right to do so. However, as it only costs me a couple of quid to anchor for the day at Newtown ('cos I'm only little), it seems a bit churlish to make a fuss about it.
