And being as im not local... Liable for vat and a fine equal to the vat,
So maybe i best pay it.....

Or i. Stuck to the channel islands, which is stunning, but moulles and fritts in france calling

I think perhaps you'd have been better doing that before you did her up! Isn't it based on value? Perhaps you'll get away with what you paid when you purchased? I think JFM's the forum guru on VAT intricacies. :)

Don't forget the Westcountry too when you get the exploration bug... :encouragement:

The rules allow for cost or valuation, reflecting different situations with different boats. As you have owned the boat for some time it is likely that submitting a valuation would be best, using a specialist surveyor/valuer who knows his way around. You have a choice of paying in either UK or France (or even Spain where lower valuations may be acceptable) so worth investigating which will be lowest as status of payment is the same - that is acceptable across EU

Just to add my tuppence worth into the mix. First off, I thought that the VAT becomes payable at the (EU) country the boat is first imported into (France in this case), so you wouldn't be able to 'choose' the country to pay the tax into without taking the boat with you? Further to this, we once looked at a boat at the CI's which didn't have the VAT paid for and the broker suggested we'd take it to the UK rather than France due to the French process of handling the VAT issue being shall we say 'less predictable'...

I wonder ifyou can phone French customs and then uk customs and agree a ugure before you arrive and thus choose the lower agreed figure? or if you sail in and cant agree can you sail ot again and back without paying vat?

So it all comes down to my original very pertinent question! Are you importing it to France or just visiting?

Pretty sureRob is thinking of a quick visit for his moules, so maybe a few days at the most. But des the time in the eu make a difference?

Your post #5 was not correct. If he visits the EU for just 5 minutes he is strictly speaking liable for the VAT. The exemption for temporary import is available only to non EU residents but Rob doesn't live in CI; he merely keeps his boat there

Sorry for delay in reply, im in Congo at the moment...
Boat needs to go across the channel one way orthe other, to pay the vat.
I cannot go outside CI waters otherwise, as im not local.... Just as JFM says
CI boats are being checked in france. Shame mine misses out on the grandfather clause by a year....

Are there companies about to help with this sort of thing...

How old is the boat? Can she be aged by a year? :)
