pay as you go internet dongle - argos success

this thread has just got my attention, as we are looking at alternatives to BT for phone and broadband at home. The landlines are not unbundled here so only a BT landline is available, and "broadband" tops out at a little over 1 meg.

In our new house we have been questioning do we really need a landline at all? but up to now the problem has been only a weak 2g phone signal (which a Chinese booster from ebay improves)

However what is about to change this, is EE have submitted a planning application for a new mobile phone mast about 3 miles away from us line of sight. That will surely be 4g?

So this opens up the possibility of getting a decent mobile phone contract for all calls and all internet as long as we can get a decent data allowance and connect 2 computers and 2 tablets to the internet. Obviously limited to EE as it's their mast.

I see they are offering 65Gb data per month for £30. Is there anything better, e,g truly unlimited?

Three fell foul offering Truly Unlimited mobile broadband, and had to withdraw it and set limits. I had their unlimited for a couple of years, but the speed was throttled massively between 3pm and midnight, although not everybody experienced this.

I havent seen or heard of anyone offering unlimited since - and boating forums are quite hot at spotting this kind of stuff.

64Gb for £30.50 is a pretty good deal, and a lot of bandwidth, unless you watch TV and videos 24/7. If you are used t 1Mb broadband, your habit wont be to watch TV, films and video so, if you dont go too mad, 64Gb should be more than enough.

I got a deal with 50Gb per month for £27 or so, on a 2 year contract. The deal was only offfered last January, and I havent seen anything like it since. I'd guess the 64Gb offer will be short lived as well, so you may need to snap it up, (may not make sense for you if there is no service yet??).

No point snapping up the deal just yet, I could not use it as they have not yet built this mast so no service here. Yet. I am just looking at options to ditch the landline, and if 4g service here becomes a reality this might be the way to do it.

I have no idea how much we use a month, we have BT unlimited and I can not find any way to see how much we actually use. We don't watch tv over the internet as it's just too slow, but if we had a better service, this might be possible and of course data usage would go up a lot.

May not work for you but BT Mobile is carried on EE, and you get substantial SIM discount as a Broadband customer... I know you're not happy with BT, but maybe you go back to a very basic BB, and use 4G for the bulk of what you do

I'm currently on a Cable Ship in the middle of the North Sea, on the boundary between the UK & Norwegian sectors. Here, we've been given a 4g dongle that is linked into the Norwegian sector routing stuff. Terrific speed, better than at home on the Black Isle by far. The UK don't really have the mind set to provide this kind of thing.

I did a big ship cruise in the Norwegian Fjords earlier this year. Even when surrounded by mountains, 99% of the time I had a superb 4G connection. Best of all I have unlimited data and roaming included in my £20 a month '3' package so it didn't cost me a penny.
