pay as you go internet dongle - argos success

Only if they are data-only contracts. The data part of their phone contracts cannot officially be tethered.

No, that is not correct, as i keep saying. Argghhhhhhhh

Scroll down to the "filters" section. Under "Data allowance", the top option states "All-you-can-eat (30GB Personal Hotspot)"

Personal Hotspot.

Share your phone’s internet with other devices such as tablets and laptops. This can be really handy when you’re away from a WiFi network. You can use all of your data allowance as a personal hotspot unless you’ve chosen a plan with All-you-can-eat data in which case you can use up to 30GB of this each month as a personal hotspot allowance in the UK.

Feel At Home.

On our Advanced Plans you can use your allowances in 42 destinations worldwide to call and text the UK and use your data at no extra cost. Terms apply. Learn more about Feel At Home.

It has changed since I got my contract, then, when All-you-can-eat was completely excluded. Thanks for the update.

I keep saying it, but perhaps my laptop is posting in invisible text, Three data contracts (annually or monthly) do allow tethering.
I'm sorry to have misled you, I was referring to general NOT data-only contracts.
I believe the original poster was looking for an all-systems contract.
I too use a Data-only contract which whose suppliers are quite happy to allow tethering. I still need a mobile SIM for voice traffic.
GiffGaff offer both mobile data only and a general contract. Plusnet offer only a general connection with a large data allowance.
No skin off data-only contractors, once you've used your bandwidth that's it!! And many data-only contractors are preventing VOIP (except Elisa).
I hope I've clarified things

Damn, i think i may have misled you now James. I didn't mean data only contracts, although it does look like it from my wording in post #60, apologies.

Hopefully post #63 makes the situation clearer. Three offer an annual contract at £32 per month for unlimited data, minutes and texts. You can legitimately use 30gb of data tethered. Same package on a 30 day contract is £35 per month.

Seems the calls, text and data can all be used in 42 other Countries too :

I've just received one of these 24GB data SIMs from Amazon. It all looks fine, but unlike every other SIM I have bought there is no "activate by" date on it. Does anyone know how long I have? My mifi is on the boat ...

I am pretty sure there is no set date as to when you need to activate it by. I didn't even have to register mine, just put it in my mifi and it worked immediately.

I have a pre-pay Three SIM that I mainly use for travelling in Spain and Portugal.
Last time I topped it up (September) it was £25 for an add-on for unlimited ("all you can eat") data for a month including roaming. Unused phone credit doesn't expire, so I won't find that the SIM has been blocked due to lack of use between trips.

I can't see how the phone company would have any means of telling that the data being delivered to your phone is being passed on to another device via a tethering link-up. Or is there something technical here I'm missing?

Some people are reporting that they can detect it, but i use 30gb plus a month tethered to my laptop an my account shows zero data used tethered.

I was using mine for a good few months without any problems - its against there terms and conditions but in all honesty I don't think they care too much. As long as you're taking the piss too much.
I could look stupid here but do the have to restict the amount of information that is sent to satalites by capping data. Is this why they do it ? or is it just greed . Who knows.
