First of all, good luck to him. I'm sure that any editor who didn't get criticism on first taking over a well read journal would think he had lost all of the readers.

However, that picture of him at the chart table, sat phone in hand does rather look as though he is either making a mayday call or, having made one, is looking at the sight of the helicopter winchman appearing at the top of the companionway.

Think you're right. Just a contrast from Sarah Norbury standing at the wheel looking meaningfully into the middle distance. Perhaps that's the point.
