Daughter is planning to come across to France with us on the boat in May/June. The trouble is her passport expired recently and, as she will be changing her name in July, she doesn't want to have to go through the cost and hassle of applying for a new passport twice.

Anyone know if there are any alternatives like ID card or temporary passport available?

about this time last year, neither jimi nor I had our passports and despite fatipa and my best efforts to have jimi either arrested or handcuffed to the binnacle, the St Vaast customs plod accepted drivers licence and credit card as proof of identity. There were 5 of them and they did the boat over. they did have a sense of humour although one of the plod muttered that we thought this was a joke which he didn't. The ship's papers were up to date.

Friend of mine got turned back whilst waiting to go into Calais because he'd forgotten his passport. Not very happy as he had never been asked or approached by a customs launch before. Not a very jolly lads trip across the channel and back non-stop. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The old one year passport from the post office got scrapped. All or nothing now. Treat her and don't risk getting turned away.

Lots of cases where people have got away with out a passport or with an out of date one (including myself). Do you really want to spend all of your holiday worrying about this? or would you prefer to spend the money and have one thing less to worry about.

Steve?

Resident in tiny Belgium, cannot leave the country without valid UK passport. Needs renewing in August, will take 4 weeks. Will go stir crazy - not even able to pop over to LU to visit the grandsons, nor even a daysail to France

I think it will depend a lot on which port you are entering.
If it is Cherbourg I reckon you would get away with "Expiré, mon Dieu!" as Temptress suggested, as they get lots of CI visitors that just pop over to do a bit of shopping. I'm not so sure about ports further East.

Bebfore this shengan open boarders began you could travell within europe up to one year after your pass expired i did and was checked in Italy with no problem in France i asked if it was the same it was.
While my pass was once in Rome and another time in Paris for renewal i just needed the registered letter recipt to gonon travellimg

A friend once did it on the eurostar using his student bus pass. He pointed as some official walking off, and said "he said it's OK".

Do NOT risk it

We were checked down to inspecting each page of each passport last year. and we had pre-prepared the formal shengan crew lists.

As a non shengan country we opted out of the system cos we like our borders.

Get the passport.
