Last October I spent a month in London and passed some of my time in bookshops. I came across many great books on sailing and the sea, three of which I'm happy to recommend:

Passage to Torres Strait - Miles Hordern
Sailing the Pacific - Miles Hordern
Sailing for Home - Theo Dorgan

The two first books are by an Englishman turned New Zealander who describes his singlehanded sailing in the Pacific. He reflects upon the destiny of castaways and beachcombers in the days of sail and offers a wealth of historical data that opened a new world to me. In common with the second author, Theo Dorgan, who narrates a return delivery of a 70 ft ketch from Antigua to Ireland, he also offers the reader glimpses of the state of mind of someone who spends a protracted time at sea.

Dorgan is an Irish poet whose book is a pleasure to read because he manages to convey to the reader a lot of the emotional content of a long seavoyage without becoming sentimental.
