Leaving Ramsgate at some point tomorrow(friday) and making for Portsmouth. Would like to make Portsmouth Sunday pm. with stopovers on fri and Sat nights. Is this too much to expect in a Westerly 28? and can you suggest suitable stopovers. If anyone wants to offer me a suggested passage plan i would be more than happy. I'm not lazy, just lacking experience and would welcome the advice. Thank you

Wind doesn't look great

The only all weather all tide stop offs are Eastbourne, Newhaven and Brighton.

So Ramsgate>Eastbourne>Brighton>Solent.

Shoreham is also accessible 24hrs - it's just be a long wait for the next lock opening!

It's a shame that Saturday looks unpromising. I've done Blackwater to Brighton in 21 hours in a Sadler 29, and I would be inclined to go for a big hop on Friday, starting off on the inshore route to Dover a couple of hours before change of tide and clearing Dungeness easily. You've still got the option of Eastbourne but even if you're tired and have to sleep through Saturday, Brighton to Solent on Sunday looks easy.

I have done and intend to do shortly:

Ramsgate - Eastbourne - Hayling

In a 22 footer, so you should be fine.

I've done this route twice in a Fulmar
Dover or Ramsgate to Eastbourne - nice marina, good showers, easy to fuel
Eastbourne to Portsmouth
One night two long days
Depart one or two hours before the ebb starts and you will probably need to motor sail to keep the speed up, coming the other way is much easier.

I did Tollesbury (River Blackwater) to Southampton in an Etap26i in one hop the week before Christmas. Details here: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showflat.php?Number=2107470. The position markers up until Dungeness are estimates, after that they are actual hourly plots, so it gives you an idea of progress after you 'turn the corner'... we ended up motorsailing the whole way to keep speed above 5 knots.

Main points to watch out for are Dover entrance, don't stray too far South into the TSS, then the Owers off Selsey Bill (but then that's all covered in the almanac/charts)... oh and the seemingly endless supply of lobster pot markers!

Try and catch the tides and good luck

Wind guru posted by lady in bed looks good to me , could be a lot worse. If you are doing a haul to eastbourne, i was there last week at 18.45, the extra hour now helps, however, all the bouyage lights were completely down/removed if you arrive after dark. I suggest phoning ahead to check. It is OK but at the time there was only a safe water marker which gives a transit into the harbour. No other bouys or lights til you see the lock entrance.
You need to time beachy head tides, can run pretty quick, even on neaps.

Re: Passage Ramsgate to portsmouth. Eastbourne Info.

The Trinity House vessel is in harbour (Eastbourne) to put them back .. though perhaps not in time for this weekend.

When entering the harbour (especially at mid to low tide) make sure to track west from the safe water mark into the harbour in a straight line (or err on the south side of the line). The Barnhill wreck is north of this track by a safe margin (say 50 to 100 meters) but complacency would be a mistake. At night there is a leading RWG sector light, again, keep to the south edge of the White sector. However, spotting the harbour against the back lights is very difficult, the quick 3 flashing light on the Martello tower to the south of the harbour entrance is tricky to spot, the give away (such as it is) is a "dark" unlit piece of shore which is the tower itself. Don't worry about depths, the annual dredge out has been completed, so charted depths should be good.

Regards,
Jeff.
