Hi, Can some of you more enlightened guys tell me the 'authority' that you are supposed to contact when you are heading off on a long trip. It is a question in my YM and I cannot think for the life of me who it is. I am away from home at the moment and cannot access my books and course work.

I of course, should know this anyway as we have done many long trips but never tell the authorities that we are going anywhere javascript:void(0)

Thanks muchly

It's sensible to call the coastguard on VHF and tell them your route. They wont check you've arrived, but at least if someone at home gets worried they'll have a record of when you left, and ETA at destination.

First time on here, not sure if this is the right location to ask this question.
I have a sealine F33 and would like to take it on the french canals to Paris or further. my question is has anyone done this trip on a fly bridge boat before and what route is the best for the max air draft.

Many thanks
Paul

You need to start a new thread really and title it something like "Air draft on French waterways". Up to Paris there won't be a problem for an F33 assuming you are entering at Le Havre.

sir, better to post this as an original post in it's own right, more people will see it &respond.many forumites have done this&i am sure will help, regards m m 1.

There is no obligation to contact any authority on general passages. Making a VHF TR call to the CG can be a good idea, but as nick says it's of limited safety use. It's not like filing a flight plan in the aviation world.

Thanks guys, glad we are not the only ones that doesn't obey the 'rules'. We deliberately don't tell the marina people as they re-let our berth if they know we are away for a while, which we have already paid for, it pees us off that they don't even discount a tiny bit off our annual bill.

Yep our problem as well if the marina now we are away then birth filled. and I wouldn't trust them anyway. We tell friends such as other skippers. we just call them by mobile say we are departing such a marina lets say in France and expect to hear from us as we get mobile phone coms other side. We will be on a bearing of X trip time X . Nice to know if it goes wrong somebody you can trust will raise the alarm for you.

They can then raise the alarm to the coast gard with all the details.
