I am going across the channel to Boulogne and back next month.

Some very useful replies were forthcoming when I brought this up a few months ago, in particular the route to follow from Ramsgate.

I am interested to hear what people would recommend for the route coming back ie Boulogne to Ramsgate. It looks to me like it is better to follow the coast northward from Boulogne and then cross the TSS from buoy ZC2. The alternative might be to cross directly from Boulogne.

Your advice please.

Have not done it for a while but it used to be a regular trip and IIRC we used to come out of Boulogne turn right up towards Cap Gris Nez then head over to S Foreland and up past Deal to Ramsgate.

Sail, then which way come wind, or power and what do the tide?

I tend to creep up to Calais, cross at right angles and go inside the Goodwin but have gone direct and coasted and sometimes gone up as far as Gravelines and crossed from there being lee bowed by tide into Ramsgate.

It is always an interesting passage and not one you can program into the 'puter in advance for any which weather/tide.

Have a great crossing,

Dratsea
