I have found another use for my sextant; watching partial eclipses of the sun.

A date for your diary is between 1817 and 1913 (WEST) on 12/08/2026, when 89 per cent of the Sun will be covered.

Didn't even think to use mine - I used the colander trick to amuse and amaze my children*.


*elicit a series of unimpressed grunts before complaining I'd interrupted their Netflix. I know what they meant really though.

My wife dug out our eclipse glasses that we bought in 1999. I tried to take a photo through them but couldn't make it work. In any case, it was what it was, pleasingly curious in a mild sort of way.

I took photos of the transit of Venus that way in 2004. The film never came back from the processors.

I used exactly the same method as @DJE in 2004 and got some photos. That needed three tripods!

I used a pair of stabilised binoculars and I’m pretty sure the photos would have been sharp enough.
