Part1 Registration renewal charges - excessive increase.

Hi everyone, I recently recieved the renewal for my Part1 certificate of registration and was rather displeased to find the cost to had gone up from £49 five years ago to £72 - an increase of 47% equating to an inflation busting 9.4% per year.
I sent an email to the email address provided on the documentation to ask how they can justify such a large increase for what is basically a trivial admistrative task. It can't be due to them upgrading their payment systems as they insist on payment by cheque when everyone else has moved to the 21st century. They didn't even bother to show me the curtesy of a reply which tells me all I need to know about their disdain for leisure boaters. I understand the reason to renew is so the register is kept current however the renewal charge is disproportionate in my view.

I am inclined to change to Part3 registration as this only costs £35 to set up and presumably less to renew. I'd be interested to hear what others think on whether Part1 is worthwhile or not.

I think its important if you have shared ownership or if you have a mortgage on the boat but part 3 is much cheaper. You get a dinky little certificate and an SSR number which can be useful if you cross the channel
 
Had a look at the Jersey registration website where I had my boat registered until recently and see that renewal is £100 but it's every 10 years as opposed to 5 years in the UK.

Like many things, it depends.

If your boat is worth a lot of money, or maybe quite large, or maybe a sought after type, and/or your thoughts are on resale in the short or medium term; then it would probably be best to keep up the Part 1.

If, on the other hand, say, you have a popular but common 1980's boat worth 20k and you intend to keep it 20 years then possibly change to Part 3.

Things never seem to be black and white ?
 
Whilst I agree that the increase is disproportionate it costs quite a lot to get Part 1 and it does provide more reassurance than Part 3 in terms of showing the provenance of the boat and any outstanding debt or absence thereof. In the overall costs fof boating it is a relatively trivial amount so I would keep up the Part 1.

Thanks to all for your helpful replies. I think I may bite the bullet and stick to Part1. I agree with Greg2 that the amount is not much compared to other boating costs , its just annoying that they arbitralily increase the renewal cost so far above inflation.
 
But isn’t inflation an average number .Just happens most years a positive .There will be scale with a low end and high end and of course an average .In the basket of measurements there will differences eg stuff reliant on oil etc .Just because a thing is not exactly the same as inflation .....so what ? Every price movement , if any cant be expected to mirror this magic inflation figure exactly.
,Some will be the same ( as already pointed out above-£49@10 years ) some will decrease some match an inflationary rise , some rise in steps above inflation , to kinda play catch up .
Not sure it warrants a whinge tbo .
Particularly when the OP goes on to say he does not actually need part 1 .....when there’s an alternative part 3 which will satisfy his reg current requirements ,
