Ok i've now chosen to put the boat on the part 1 registrar and as the boat is brand new have all the bill of sale etc. I haven't had a tonnage survey do yet however but did get a Builders Certificate through the post yesterday. If I sent this in do I need the survey which of course would cost me about another £150 quid?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I do believe you will need a survey, to measure the boat the way it's done for part 1, it's a funny way of doing it, but that's the way it is I'm afraid.

Yes, that was my experience. You need to pay for measuring. The measurement has nothing to do with the builder's figures, it is basically a measure of the total internal volume of the vessel, because Thames Tonnage refers to the weight of wool that theoretically can be carried (honestly!)

You do get your number and tonnage engraved on a nice piece of wood, for attachment to the main beam (??) of the boat. So your money is not all lost.

Anoying thing is that the Builders Certificate is from the DETR must be sent to the Registry of Shipping and Seamen in Cardif and has Tonnage marked on it as 14.58. Very very frustrating.

Do you need to be there for the survey?

You have to pay for the engraving, I did anyway! It shouldnt be engraved on a piece of wood to be fixed, it should be engraved into a beam on the boat! But they let you get away with it, after all how are you going to engrave it into glass!

I think the whole process is ridiculously archaic - a hangover from the nineteenth century.
The only way of saving any money is to get your nameplate made in the local hardware store instead of buying a fancy plate from a chandler.

Try ringing the MCA at Cardiff, ask for Ann-Marie Thomas who deals with registrations. Lovely lass, met her at the boat show and she is nearly old enough to be my granddaughter. Discuss the situation with her in view of the DETR measurement. Trouble is that I know of two boats of the same class, where two measurers got two different answers.

If you have to have a survey, try the RYA technical office. They charge £115 (inc VAT) or did in November. No discount for membership as far as I know!
