The new boat is part 1 registrered, the owner is keeping the name to put on his next boat, there will be no mortgage on it so theoretically no need for part 1, would you advise me to keep the part 1 with my new name on it or allow for total de-registration if thats possible and re-register on part 3.

Part 1 is better, IMHO, in as much as it gives assured title, so no hassle proving clear title when you come to sell on. I take it you found a P360, then?

I thought the registered name stayed with the boat, not the owner.
I believe the original owner cannot keep the name, but is the only person entitled to name another boat with " Original Name II"

...yes but the previous owner can do a last-minute name change to keep the old name. Quite common, we just did it.

Keep the Part 1. The hassle of part 1 occurs when you first do it. But yours is already done. The maintenance of a part 1 is no worse than part 3, but you have better title and easier to sell the boat etc. So keep it part 1 imho

I also retained a name, but the boat was exported to the USA so that may not be the same thing. Also it was in the days of the Blue Book so things may be different now.

Nope terryw

If you have a Part1 name you can transfer it and leave the new owner to rename the boat, as the previous owner of our boat did. Of course he had the option to name his next boat whatever2 unless it had already been used and leave the original. But there is no way the name has to stay with the boat nor is there any limit other than decency ( a v rare commodity) to stop someone usurping the name whatever2. The name is not owned by the original owner but if he/she has registered it to their boat no one else can name their boat in a way that will be confused with the first.

Ian - keep it Part1 whatever else you do. So much better than SSR. think up a name (3 choices as until you try them they won't say whether you can "have them") and check it's got a carving plate.

Best wishes - looking forward to a run

Anthony,
I stand corrected over name transfer, but still believe that there has been a change in the rules regarding Whatever II. Only the registered owner of Whatever can use the name Whatever II, but anyone could use "Whatever of Wherever"

Interesting Terry

Any idea when it changed?

I still think the best boat name I have seen is "Never Again V"

so you reckon I won't be able to register "Never Again 27" for our fourth boat, if we ever get another?

This came up last year. Here is the link.

Re: Ta!

I had forgotten about that Fred

but there is a lot of "I seem to believe" rather than chapter + verse in it - not that it matters until one wants to change/keep/get another name, by which time the Rules (or custom + practice) will have changed anyway
