I'm spending quite a lot of time onboard these days and getting through quite a lot of paraffin in the Taylors heater and oven. These 4 litre containers from B&Q and the like are expensive and quite a rip off. I know its a long shot, but does anyone in my area know where paraffin can be bought at a more reasonable price? Maybe bring your own container style like the olden days!

Parrafin is the same as domestic central heating oil (kerosene)

I fill my own cans from the oil tank using the plastic level sight glass tube. Works out at 44 p per litre.

I recently looked into this for my own heater, which specifies premium or lighting grade paraffin.
Paraffin, or kerosine, seems to be covered by BS2869, which defines 2 specifications. C2 is normally supplied in bulk for domestic heating etc. C1, or premium paraffin, seems to be the type normally sold in hardware stores at high prices. This is more highly refined, burns with a less smokey flame, ( a higher smoke point ), and has a higher char point, whatever that means. The main use for it seems to be lighting and room heaters without flues.
I think that the cheaper paraffin is probably useable for boat heaters, but there might be more soot produced in the burner. I don't think I'll use it in my oil lamp.
A local shop used to sell premium paraffin fairly cheaply from a bulk tank, but were recently banned from this by Dept. of Weights and Measures. I can now only find it in prepackaged form.

Following the other replies here, I also did some research to establish if there is any difference between kerosene and paraffin. My conclusions are the same as yours i.e paraffin is basically higher grade kerosene, more suited to use where the fumes have to be breathed and also less likely to cause soot and blockages. It also seems that oil fired central heating was run on gas oil previously but most modern installations now run on kerosene. Therefore you could use the stuff out of the heating tank but it is not as clean burning as paraffin. Hope I got all that right.
I will try Evans tomorrow and also some garden centres. Thanks again for the replies.

If you're ever travelling East, there's a place on the industrial estate in Rhuddlan that sells it in 5 gallon drums. (Caldo Oils, I think, but let me know if interested, and I'll find out for sure) - About 5 minutes off the A55.

Add: Yes, I think it is Caldo - their web page

Thanks, I think thats just what I'm looking for assuming that bulk is cheaper.

No problem. I know a couple of people on the estate who have paraffin heaters in their units, and they buy from Caldo (I've only bought engine oil from them). Worth giving them a ring - they're very friendly - and if you go in, look out for the picture of a radial engined motorbike on the wall behind the counter.
