Paraffin stove spares

Spares for paraffin stoves seem to be more and more difficult to source. The burners for my Taylor's stove were Optimus ones, but Primus will also fit. Try searching for them with Google. Base camp show themselves as keeping them but earlier in the year thay had no burners in stock. This list shows some alternative suppliers.

Here is their list of distributors. My nearest one (Foxes on the Orwell) carries a reasonable supply of spares including burners, and will order anything they don't have.

Pure coincidence, I am looking for a Taylor's cooker.:)

Want one? PM me if you're interested in mine!

re burners: basecamp apparently had them made as the ones available from Blake's had quality issues. An alternative source would be http://www.hytta.de/kocher/414.htm. Or you can buy a replacement from Bertschi in Switzerland. They're said to be vastly superior to the Primus/Optimus design but also a bit pricey:

That supplier's pretty exciting. I am convinced that the 4 leg burners which Taylors used to supply are better than the current 2 leg ones. I had thought that Taylors still worked in inches or even cubits. Is the 14 mm thread that most of the listed burners seem to have actually compatible? If so I'm up for some "four legs good" experiments.

I'm also fascinated by their regular, roaring and silent burners. They all claim to give the same amount of heat - is it just how much noise you like?

They're in the same price ballpark as Taylor's spares.

I bought some bits and bobs from them in the past and quite liked them. Didn't have too much luck with one of their pressure lamps though. The noisy burners certainly live up to their reputation but do give out a fair amount of heat. Once had their Prabhat No. 2. The main difference between the Optimus/Primus range and the other burners is that they can't be adjusted. You'll have to regulate them via pressure which works fine on the smaller stoves and maybe even on the Taylors but would be a bit unpractical with my current Optimus. Depends what you like. Being simpler, they are more reliable though. Just drop them a line concerning compatibility, they should sort you out. Not sure if the different height might be a problem btw.

P.S.: Just a thought but since Taylor's used the Optimus burners from Sweden and Portugal I would've expected them to be metric

Thanks, I might give them a call when I get a chance. The Regulierbrenner from Optimus looks like the ones I used to get and like. Their layout of the catalogue and info is much better than Taylors, and they are cheaper if anything (not to say cheap though). The thing that made me suspicious about whether Taylors would be metric is that they quite the spanner sizes in inches. It might be an M14 fine thread - I'll put a thread gauge on one next time I'm at the boat.

Pressure regulating the Taylor's doesn't work very well, and it of course affects both burners and the oven whether you like it or not. Most entertaining was when my pressure guage was playing up and I pumped it hugely over pressure. The burners squirted paraffin far faster than it could vapourise, with spectacular results. The deckhead was needing a coat of paint anyway.
