Not sure if its of any help but I was delivering my boat to the docks in Southampton on Saturday about 1230 and just by the Itchen entrance was a 40 ft launch flying flag Alpha of all things (no sign of diving going on) and they fired two red flares as I went past. As it was broad daylight, clear weather and there were several people on the boat (and channel 16 was quiet) I assumed that they were doing something official/approved.
Always thought Lymington was a little behind the times, but 50 something years! You got one of them new-fangled South Coast One Designs on order yet?

with regard to taking flares to the Police Station, I just phoned the Hampshire Constabulary enquiries line at 'HQ'. The lady said she 'wouldn't have thought that I could take flares' to the local nick. The best way to find out is to physically go in and ask them !
Clearly a consistent policy, awareness and communications within the Force then .... NOT.
I think someone recently posted on here about taking flares into their local police station and immediately provoking a medium-sized panic, much discussion about ordinance and frenzied phone calls to the bomb squad.
I may be hallucinating, mind you. Anybody care to try it and see?
Is it not the case that the vessel in question is moored about fifteen feet from a fuel barge? Now I presume that the said fuel barge is fairly well insulated and the like but lord, if the wind had carried it the consequences would not bare thinking about.

With my CG hat on it is worth stressing again that a red flare is a distress flare, period. CG will never authorise their use for any other circumstances. That ensures that when you are in trouble and fire off a flare, it's treated for real and someone will (should!) take notice.
If you see anyone doing what HoratioHB saw, do us all a favour and report it!
Excellent news! - now I'm in Kent (I think) I'm going to try to get rid of the 2 1980s orange smokes and 1 red rocket I keep in a bucket on deck and have been trying to get someone to take for two years ....
This ain't strictly correct, at least not in Kent. Local teams can still collect (we will even come to your house if it's not too far) and get them shifted to the nearest MRCC - Dover in our case. MoD pick up from Dover instead of the old system of running round all the stations.
This is all a bit precarious, though, it depends on the goodwill of the MoD unit concerned, if they decide they cannot or don't want to do it, that's it.

It is interesting that collection still works OK in Kent but not in Suffolk, I will have another go at Fox's and see if some action can't be taken to get rid of these flares.
