Paper charts in the cockpit

\"Chart in one hand...\"

In the days of my youth, I found myself off a hairy entrance (Dover, west, SW F7, c. 1981) with the chart in one hand. Next moment, the chart was out of my hand and in the sea... /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Re: Whatever works for you.

I've noticed that some people can hold what they see in their heads, troll down to the chart table, come back up and everythings fine. Other people need to relate the chart to whats outside more directly. The RYA examiners don't mind you taking a chart into the cockpit.

A mate of mine lost his chart of the Scillies overboard at a crucial moment. That made him concentrate.

Of course you could watch the echosounder, look at the chart and keep the plotter ticking over.

Re: think again!

things happen quickly in fog, so there's no reason at all why you shouldn't have a chart of a tight area up ondeck. And, there's no reason at all why you wouldn't have more than one chart , or indeed, several in the very unlikely event of it being blown away oor falling off the deck, as with winch handles etc, no? Certainly I wd and do have spare charts of critical areas, and more spare charts in case the first lot of chart got taken upstairs by some loose-fingered numptie, so we'd still have one as well. I'd also have some chocloate biscuits and a little lamp for iang to help him with his map-copying. Meanwhile, jimi would be using his beady eyes and i wd be on the helm, all with radar and a "clearing bearing" such as "stay 2 miles off for outer passage and you'll be safe" as all the while, various other crew would rush up on deck with a hand-drawn chart, or a chart, and er whoops chuck it overboard and er oh dang rush back down again in blind panic, certain that if only they had an 97inch full colour chartplotter it wd be much safer. You can get to the med with capacity for a only six waypoints as i found out, and not once lok at the chart thingy except showing a big pic which answers the "I wonder how far have we got to go" question...

Re: think again!

I took doublesided colour photocopies of various bits of charts that were important eg Needles Channel etc etc and laminated them. Very useful. Also tend to have both Admiralty and Imray charts of an area.

Re: all very well saying that bu

all i'm sayin is wot i wos taught that it is a cardinal sin to take the charts up top!! And my tatty old solent ones would disnidigrate is a sparrow f*rted near them!

So leave me bloody sea cocks and charts alone..I'm gonner do a poll soon to see how many others leave their sea cocks on ,,,

Re: all very well saying that bu

puot me down for a "soddit, leavem open". I still reckon yor 30+ holes is too much - we have 2 holes for engines, 2 holes for aircon, gennies, firepump and 1 u-bended hole for blackwater. Oh, and a depthsounder tho obv i don't use that. Oh also a paddle weel thing, not that either, makes 7 underwater holes. Tho praps a few more elsewhere tho not under w/line. But i still can't be arsed turning them off.
