A friend has just had a serious mishap (not at fault) which will take months to repair and was surprised, as I was, to learn that his yacht insurer does not cover his transportation home nor emergency accommodation. Can anyone advise if the much lauded Pantaenius policy covers these expenses?

All your friend has to do is read the clauses he agreed to. In my case, they say:

5.7. reasonable costs of accommodation, up to £100 per person per night, for you and your crew, family and guests who had been staying onboard the yacht, if the yacht becomes uninhabitable or unsafe, in the opinion of our surveyor, due to loss or damage covered by this insurance while in use abroad. If we agree in writing that you may leave the yacht unattended, we will pay reasonable (Economy Class) repatriation costs instead of accommodation costs.

Just renewed mine with Amlin, was surprised to read that we only get the get you home bit if you buy the legal insurance bit at an extra 13 quid! I did buy it!

Very good. He has read the clauses. My question, rather selfishly, is with regard to whether I should change insurer as we use the same one. Names would be helpful. I thought Amlin were underwriters with whom you cannot insure directly?

Surely the get you home bit should be covered by your “ holiday” insurance.

You may well be right, but often we don't think of these things. It happened to me last year. wife and I were going to sail with friends on their boat in Mallorca and got the call when in airport in Palma that they had unfortunately hit a rock and come off worse as a result boat now ashore, so we ended up staying in a hotel one night and rented a nice villa for the rest of the week for the four of us - didn't spoil the holiday for us. I never thought to claim on my annual travel insurance and I'm sure the friends didn't include it in their insurance claim with Pants. Mind you the the cost of the repair for what was a small crack in the hull below the waterline ( water was coming in, but not much) was staggeringly high even without our villa!

Y Yacht policy exclusion -

You are also not covered for:
• the cost of travel expenses and temporary accommodation;

I don't have their free Legal insurance document to hand so can't check if included with that.

Those who rely on standard holiday insurance may be disappointed as it generally doesn't cover living on and crewing a boat, it's usually geared towards being a paying passenger on commercial or small hired boat.

That is our Pantaenius (UK) clauses I've quoted from, in case that wasn't clear.

Years ago I fortunately read the document with my annual holiday insurance renewal. And discovered that it had changed to exclude boating as a specific, rather than incidental, part of the holiday. I rang them and pointed out that it was now useless for my flotilla trips. And they changed the clause back again for the same price to retain my custom...

I got a quote from Pantaenius last week - excellent looking policy but ... the premium they were asking was exactly double what I pay Y Insurance!

I like to know the reason behind this quote , I been with them for well over 25 years my new policy which started last month was slightly down from last year ,
I had made enquiry three times in the past when reading here that their are much more expensive and each time there not been any different to talk about .
Is it becuSe of claims?

Thanks for all the above and to Yngmar clarifying Pants wording.
I'm beginning to understand why Pants are more costly than other insurers.
Incidentally, he has also been told by his insurer's assessor that he must remain with boat during the work to satisfy himself that the repairs are adequate. I assume this is the assessor trying it on as I cannot see any basis for an insurance company to stipulate such a requirement.

I am also insured with Pantaenius, but in Sweden.
I find it interesting that the terms and conditions apparently differ quite a lot between countries, although the insurers all operate under the P. umbrella.
In this specific case my policy says up to ≈ £117 per person per night for necessary costs for accommodation (unclear if this is more or less generous than reasonable), but the cover is limited to seven days maximum.
There is also cover for the necessary costs for traveling home, but there is a limit of ≈ £3900 for the combined costs for accommodation and travel.
However, the UK policy seems to give cover only for such incidents happening abroad, while there is no such limitation in my policy.
So for the OP, if your boat is based outside UK, it might be worth examining the terms of other Pantaenius branches, that may offer a cover that suits you better.

I am with Pants, they allow 12 months on the water, no limits on singlehanded, do not require a survey, cover all my kit etc. For comparison I asked for a quote from Y having heard good reports. I listed all the above and more from my policy docs. The quote was less however Y had reduced the cover, limited time afloat, limited hours singlehanded, . Low price but nothing like the same cover. I was disappointed that given the info that did not quote as I had asked.

Why not give Pants a ring and ask? My Pants policy gives me the cover I need and is less restrictive than any other I have had quoted. Legal cover should recover uninsured losses if appropriate so READ the policies.

The number of people who think the assembled congregation of the Forum know more about everything in the know universe rather than the people who actually know, in this case the insurance company, astounds me at times.

You think it’s bad here. On Amazon there are frequent reviews such as

Q I am buying x does it do ?

A I don’t know
A I’ve never had one but I guess that it does
A I’ve got a different model but I’ve never used that feature etc etc etc

Back on subject, I’ve just received a ‘nice’ explanatory letter from Y Yachts explaining why my quote will be going up later on this year. I will check other insurers (especially in the light of at least two Pants customers saying that theirs are going down) but I do like the Y Yacht personal approach. I have been very happy to use them for a number of years now.

Why did they limit time afloat, is it an exposed mooring in winter weather? We're with Y, covered for 12 months in service, swing mooring based. The restricted 18 hours single handed is fine for us.
