Pantaenius are asking for £378 to cover £23000. This allows anyone with my permission to use Isha without my being on board and also single handed at night.
They want payment now yet the policy runs until 2nd May!!
Does this seem ok?

Looks expensive. I pay £131.50 for £13,500 cover, any competant person with my permission, Coast uk to Brest and Elbe, me singlehanded incl. singlehanded overnight. I am with K C Powell 01702 470035. You end up talking to blokes who Know what you are talking about, if you see what I mean. 2 years no claims. Get a quote. They seem to have a very good reputation. Policy is underwritten by Royal SunAlliance. IMHO. Paul

Well, that is1.6435%, the second poster is paying 0.9741% and I'm paying 0.6965%.

There must be a difference in the risk profile to cause such variation in premia.

You must phone around, its down to how much commission the broker wants to take, I have been with Bishop Skinner for several years now, phone around from time to time to get comparison, but they always come up tops.

There are others that will say you are being ripped off.

Not me though. My experiance with Pantaenius is that they do have a very good level of cover. Lots of things that are included, where others want extra or just will not cover. You say they want payment now. I think they have just sent you the renewal in good time for you to hunt around if you want to.

I did not get my renewal at all, just got the final demand for payment about a week or so before the insurance ran out. It had gone up a hell of a lot. When I phoned them and said that I wanted more time to check arround etc, they said yes sir no problem. Your boat will still be insured just dont take too long before letting us know if you are going to stay with us.

Good service in my opinion. so you pay your money and take your choice.

Yes, I definately agree. Bishop Skinner have been consistently competitive AND, when the s**t hit the fan last year, they were, quite simply, fantastic in their response, help and settlement. VERY, VERY highly recommended!!

Good sailing!

Remember there are two aspects to insurance comparisons.

One is the direct premium comparison; say .3% against .2% which is largely irrelevant if you do not consider the reliability of the company to pay out when required. A premium of .15% might look a bargain cf the rates quoted above, but if the comapany has a pay out record of minimal% then the deal looks less useful.

A Professional liability insurance I am aware of has recently been questioned for a ZERO payout rate over several years, yet it set out to be a competitor to the established player generally regarded as "expensive" who regularly paid out...

Point is, how many of us have any inkling of the payout rate ofm our insurers?

Have you had to make a claim? That's when you know the service you get. Have a word with some loss adjusters etc. and they'll put you in the picture. I had to take them to Court!
