Someone has asked me to look at an old 'Pandora'. Not got close, but, had a quick gander from 10 mtrs. Back home I tried sailboatdata and had a bit of trouble i.d.ing it. It has an inboard rudder and a circular lazarette hatch behind the tiller, along with the circular forward hatch. Single cabin side windows. Now, the mast and boom are wood, which makes it quite old?
Most of the pix on the net and on sbd show transom hung rudders, so, is this a Pandora? or one of the various earlier boats from EG Van de Staht. It has the trademark raised rear to the cabin, instead of a sliding hatch, along with the egg shaped cabin entry.

Binman..it does have a topping lift :o. Holding up the boom and very tatty sailcover. Not quite sure what that hides, but this certainly fits in the project boat section.
Any thoughts?

The early Pandoras has a transom hung rudder

The later Pandora 700 had a retrousse stern with a skeg mounted rudder

Neither AFAIK had a lazarette locker.

See http://www.pandorasailing.com/

Google will find more info on the Pandoras

The "Trotter" by Grimsby Marine Plastics is the same boat as the Pandora, with some minor cosmetic differences; sadly as my memory of the Trotter is about 50 years old, I can't recall the details! But I wouldn't discount the possibility that this is actually a Trotter, not a Pandora.

Vics...

The Mk1 Pandora had matching cake tin top/ lav seat cover ? hatches fore and aft.
The lazarette one was sometimes converted to hold an Ob in a well like later models.

Sounds to me like a Van de Stadt 'Spurn'. I sold one in the mid seventies and she was an old boat then, but the description of the tiller, front hatch and rear lazarette are identical, but mine had alloy spars. I knew it to be a forerunner of the Pandora, but I couldn't afford one of those.

The Spurn was built by Marine Plastics (Grimsby)as was the Trotter and both were by VDS. They were different designs - most obviously the Spurn had a wider coachroof and I think no (or minimal) side decks. The Trotter certainly had a round locker lid in the aft deck.
As far as I know all Trotters built in Grmsby had alloy spars but earlier Dutch ones were wooden. I thought all Pandoras had alloy spars.

Thanks all. Still confused, as the 700s had sliding hatches, so Pete's bits are useful. I will get some photos this week. And then figure out how to post them.

To add; the rudder post is ahead of the rear round hatch, so doubt that an outboard well conversion would work , as it would be right in the area of the aft section of the rudder.
With the round forward hatch it doesn't fit the later varients.
Let you know...
