Panda Genset advise needed

Genny has not been used for 18 months and seems to be seized - any suggestions gratefully received

You gotta get in there with eyeball and spanners to determine what is seized. Starter motor, crankshaft (unlikely), alternator. Or something tiny like the starter solenoid. Water pump impeller might be busted too. Best to run them every month or so, even if just for a minute. Anodes will need changing in the heat exchanger, if it was left with salt water in it

thanks for replies

It is not under warranty.

I have just taken ownership of the vessel and previous owner had not been using boat.

when start button is press the solenoid just clicks (voltage measures 13.6v) and I cannot turn engine over with pulley (I have messed about with decompression button)

But does the starter motor draw current? If it doesn't, then the engine isn't seized

Also try turning the crankshaft using a spanner on the nut on the flywheel pulley, to ease it

And, sorry to state something simple, but you are keeping the start button pressed for say 30secs to let the glowplug warm up, aren't you? I mean, the starter motor isn't meant to operate straight away when you press the start button. It's meant to wait for the glowplug. Say 15 seconds, though it can vary

it's a possibility that salty moisture has got into the windings and the stator/rotor is corroded into immobility.

Happened to me with an agricultural genny which got peed on by a horse.

Oh !! Ive not given it 30 secs, I was just getting a click from solenoid. I did try to turn crankshaft but did not have decent tools with me

thanks

Hi, sounds like you've got a good understanding on most of likely problems.

Your profile doesn't say where you are but if you're Solent area it might be worth giving 'Col' a call or pm on here.

Good luck.

If its the small panda its a farrymann engine and most likely siezed on the piston rings and will require a new cyliner barrell and rings to make good again, if your south coast then send a pm to me as I have various engine parts to hand.

thanks guys - spent time on it today crankshaft wont budge, it is difficult as there is no crankshaft not as such, looks like a strip dowm !!!!!!!!!

spannerman you are correct it is the farrymann engine-PM sent

I think Volvopaul may be right. I have a small Panda and it wouldnt start. When stripped down the cylinder was rusted as he stated. Have just got the parts to try and get mine going (Over £550 for a cylinder, seals and rings)

Apparently its wise to start them with the water off and once they fire up open the stopcock, I didn't know this until too late.

I regulalry ran it just to keep it working, then one time when just about to go home I tried to start it and it wouldnt start. As we were late I left it until next time. This was probably the fatal moment. So the water must have got in (due to the cranking but not starting) and then it was left for a few weeks to rust.

You might be lucky hopefully it will be somethng else. (cheaper)

Good luck with it.

D
