I must have developed a case of mucho thickness, because i'm damned if i can work out how to get my newly purchased Panasonic CF-08 to connect to my laptop. I need to use the remote desktop connection from the tablet, so it will display OpenCPN from the laptop. Laptop is stand alone, not on a network and is running Windows 7.

Any suggestions ?

Not sure but do all versions of Windows 7 support Remote Desktop out of the box. Home versions of window$ used not to support it (officially) -- there are instructions on the web for adding it to Windows XP but the are a phaff... ...suspect the same could apply to Win7?

Failing that look at installing VNC?

Let me know if you find the solution ! I am also trying to use the CF-08 as a 'slave' unit for my laptop but have struggled to find the solution. Panasonic have been of no help and an email pleading for advice to London Chartplotters has not been replied to so I am in the same boat as you (pardon the pun !). Good luck.

I;m normally good with computers, but this is pissing me off.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, it has Remote Desktop but i can't figure out how to get it to work.

Set up an ad hoc network and the tablet says it's connected, but i can't see wheren neither can remote desktop on either machine.

Some progress.

Download and install this free program :

http://download.cnet.com/Connectify-Hotspot/3000-18508_4-76168661.html

Make sure you download the free "Lite" version. Install it using all defaults. Run this program and you'll see an icon on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Hovering the pointer over this icon shows you your laptop IP address, make a note of it.

Make sure you have a password set to log into windows.

On the Panasonic tablet, double tab the Remote Desktop Icon. Tap options and enter the following :

Computer - The IP address you noted earlier.
Name - Whatever
Password - Login password for Windows on the laptop
Tick the "Save Password" checkbox.

Tap the Save As button and enter a filename, save this to the desktop.

Double tap the file you just saved and it should all work. If you plan to use OpenCPN, make sure you start the charts on the laptop before starting remote desktop, or the security within the charts won't let you start them.

Slight downside to the above, when you start the remote desktop, you can't interact directly with the laptop. You can be logged onto the tablet or the laptop, not both. Running VNC should cure that, if i can get that to work i'll report back.

As per my last post, this does work, without the need for a router or an internet connection.

But............. the Panasonic CF-08 is rubbish, IMO. It is a few years old, but it's so clunky it feels 30 years old. It's slower than a slow thing going slowly. Ok, it looks a bit rugged and waterproof, but that's the only good point.

Screen viewability is extremely poor. It's harder to see than my Lenovo tablet. Turning the brightness up high is like someone shining a really bright torch through a plastic chart, terrible. The screen looks washed out, kind of opaque, possibly due to the screen saver. The viewing angle is the worst i've seen for a very, very, long time. You have to be looking directly at the screen, tilt it a tiny bit down and you can barely see it. There is a bit of sideways movement, but no-where as much as with the Lenovo.

Can't get the Bluetooth to connect to anything, laptop, tablet, phone, nada.

The screen really has to be used with a tiny stylus, i can't see how that'll work in a bit of rough weather.

I could go on, but suffice it to say i think it's horrible and it'll be on it's way back later today.
