We are looking at bringing our speedboat down to Mallorca if a few things go to plan. It seems to work quite differently to the UK with regards to moorings in Spain with a mix or moorings to buy or rent. I assume you pay a fee to the marina per year once you own a mooring?

It seems harder than the UK to go and find a mooring. I know its not the cheapest place but given the size of the boat I thought there some cheaper places like the marina on the other side of the road in Palma itself.

Would appreciate any advice.

You can rent or own. If you own yes you pay a service charge.

Most marinas are a mix of marina owned ( rent ) and private berths. Club de mar is all private. You can rent via the marina but if the owner wants it back you leave. Immediately.

Club de mar ( and maybe other I don't know ) offer limited dry storage and put you in when needed. For a speed boat just trailer if and put it in for a few weeks when needed

it varies from marina to marina, but you can rent by the day/week/month or year - if a marina has availability.

If you buy a mooring, you usually dont actually buy the mooring itself , you buy a lease for the mooring that entitles you to use it (or rent it out) for x years. if you buy a lease there is usually a yearly maintenance charge you pay to the marina .

You can try emailing the various marinas, and see if you get a response. Alternatively some brokers may have moorings available for rent or sale, and you may find some mooring advertised privately for rent or sale.

Does the mooring need to be in palma itself? there are quite a few marinas in the bay of palma and surrouding area, that are easy to get to If you have a car.

- cala nova
- palma nova - very small though so probably no chance of a mooring
- portals vells - again very small, so probably no chance with this one
- puerto portals
- port adriano
-arenal
- club nautico santa ponsa
- puerto andratx - getting a bit out of the way in the case of this one

The best advice I can give is to visit all of the marinas you're interested in and see what they have to offer. Most will just ignore phone calls and especially emails.

If thinking of buying a lease, make very sure you understand what happens at the end of it. About 20 years or so ago, leases at a marina somewhere in Majorca came to an end, and lessees were required to pay a five figure deposit to get on the list to be considered for a new one, before knowing that the purchase price and conditions would be.

I’d say definitely visit Palma and try and secure your berth whether rent or buy ahead of time as there are precious few available berths available. All was made worse when Club de Mar and Puerto Portals started their massive refurbs as they kicked out so many boats that these took up all the empty berths around. Once they are all back up and running, there may be some more spaces around but i’m fairly certain they are in short supply currently, for renting anyway.

I was in the same position as you last year. As @petem suggests, I would take a weekend out and go down to visit all the marina offices as emails are mostly ignored and phone calls aren't much better.

Earlier this year, I had my 30ft rib transported down to Port Calanova (South West of Palma, 10 minute taxi away) and it has been a fantastic for us (also more approachable than most marinas). They have a dry-stack launch & recover setup with an app. You simply book your slot through your phone and they put it in the water or hoist out at the selected times. Boat lives out of the water on the hard and therefore preserves condition etc.

It was the perfect setup for us and they operate from May through to the end of October. I've just arranged for our boat to go into a warehouse for winter and it'll be back at Port Calanova next spring if all goes to plan. I've used the boat far more this year with it in Mallorca than I did over the past few years in North Wales.

Your boat would have been about 25mtrs from ours. We should say hi next season
