painting the inside

The paint inside my cabin is flaking off.I am taking it off with a wire brush attachment on a electric drill.It does work but is a slow job .Has anyone got a better idea? heatgun maybe?

Also what sort of paint should go back on. It is bare GRP no gelcoat so something gloopy to even things out a bit and not gloss would be ideal. Undercoat or primer?

Heat gun should work but be carful not to overheat the GRP.

If you use good marine primer then almost any undercoat and topcoat can be used. I have had good results with paints from International www.yachtpaint.com There are a number of other paint suppliers including Blakes. Both these are available from most chandlers. The International range of paint and varnishes found in DIY stores are not suitable for marine applications.

The paint could well be flaking because there is a lack of undercoat already.
A scraper can often do the job but I think you must have tried that, if the rest is not coming off easy leave it and feather the edges with sanding paper. Heat guns work best with oil based paints, not sure what you’re dealing with but I wouldn’t recommend it.

If the flaking is wide spread and you really do want to get it all off (bugger of a job) then its paint stripper all the way.

Feather means to sand the edges into a gentle graduated slope in order that they don’t show after repainting.

If Primer was used then it’s flaking because it wasn’t rubbed down properly, paint doesn’t adhere well to fibreglass and therefore needs a surface that has been keyed. I would suggest 200 wet and dry, don’t go below that number.

International bathroom paint with cork in it helps cut down condensation. used to be marketed as 'korkon' i think

Can you get "flow coat"? Its used to provide a smooth coating on the inside of some fibreglass work. I don't know if its a DIY job.

Having removed the old headlining due to 'Westerly droop' and cleaned the fibreglass up to get rid if all the old glue I used a flocoat of 50% layup resin and 50% gelcoat resin with the addition of 2% wax. I mixed in white pigment. Worked well and shouldn't peel off in a hurry.
