I want to paint the decks of my 19ft sea wych. The paint on it at the moment is the original and is very faded and tatty, there are also areas that are dented that I have been sanding and filling.

Please could someone advise me on the best process to prepare the decks for painting, if I need to use acetone or something else to clean the decks, and also the best primer/undercoat and top coat.

Many thanks.

I used Blakes (now Hempel) deck paint a couple of years ago an it is still performing well where showing. Last year I overcoated in in the non-slip areas with KiwiGrip textured deck coating and it looks and works extremely good. Just make sure the surfaces are clean and free from dust or grease. A strong cleaner is preferable to a solvent and can be pressure washed off to ensure no residue remains so you can ensure no reaction to painting. If you use the Kiwi it is water based and easy to clean up provided you don't let it dry.

The decks were not painted from new. In fact I'd not seen one with painted decks until I did mine.

I painted mine with International Interdeck when it was about 3 or 4 years old. I did nothing special that I remember other than degreasing and scrubbing them clean but see the product data sheet http://www.yachtpaint.com/MPYACMDatasheets/Interdeck+eng+A4+Y+20130213.pdf

I'd advise a light colour because the decks can get very warm in the sun if painted a dark colour.

The Sea Wych deck was not originally painted, but just the moulded gel coat finish. so if it does have paint on it then somebody has done it afterwards. If it is just non slip deck paint that you want to put on the non slip areas then clean, rub down, make good and use one of the paints designed for that. If you want to paint the whole deck moulding then you are into a big job and there are choices on the type of coatings you can use. You will need to find out what sort of paint is on there already as you may have to take it all off before you refinish. The major manufacturers such as International, Hempel, Epifanes all produce good information on their range of products and how to use them. PBO has also published a series of articles in the last year covering just this subject where they explain the options and how to do it.

Your Sea Wych looks great - ours is in great condition but I think a paint job will give it the facelift it needs. Will look in to Interdeck.

Thanks.

How can you get deck paint off a grp deck that originally had a moulded non-skid surface? :(

I find that every time I use a high pressure washer huge lumps of deckpaint come off the moulded non skid surface! This is usually unintended!

I have tried attacking the same areas witb a scraper to little avail.. The only other alternative is to use a paint stripper and wire brush. This is tedious to the extreme....

The pressure washer is by far the easiest method But I still usually end up with a patch that even this will not lift so have to revert to stripper, scraper and wire brush.

I am now convinced that the best thing to do would be to remove all paint from any moulded non skid surface and treat with oxalic acid to bring back the original gelcoat

The reason for painting moulded non-skid surfaces with deck paint is that they are not non-skid

I've just removed my coach roof deck paint.
A dirty messy job, used a 400w DA sander connected to a Nilfisk Multi vacuum cleaner, it's got an on board power outlet so it comes on when the sander's on.

Halfway through the job I discovered Abranet, it's an abrasive on an open weave, (they can also be used wet) so when they clog I chuck them in a bucket of water to soak till clean.
The under lying non skid was a diamond pattern, you can't help remove most of it, what was left I removed with an abrasive cloth (old jeans) and cellulose brush cleaner.

Sandtex masonry paint. Good range of colours, hard wearing with good non-slip qualities, easy to apply, water based, cheap compared to "marine" offerings. What's not to like?

I have the same colour, last done some 5 yrs ago & still ok.
i did not "stipple" mine, i have seen it done that way but i cant afford new foulies every year. mine was brushed out as one would normally apply paint

Enjoy that colour while you can because International, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to withdraw it! Instead they offer 'Squall Blue' - a sickening colour that would look more at home on a child's toy.

But don't paint with anything described as white or brilliant white - you'll soon realise that none of the other yachts are actually white, and you'll also need sunglasses. Anything slightly off white is OK.

+ 1, I painted our decks 5 years ago and they are still good. I have had to redo the cockpit floor each year as that is high wear, and have once redone the aft section of the side decks for the same reason. I am still using the original 5 L can and there is enough left for 2 or 3 more cockpit coats. Cost if I remember correctly was £9-99.
