Hi,

Anybody tried painting props with Hammerite or similar? What were the results, any tips? Mine will come back from refurb painted but was wondering if it's worth giving them some extra protection.

Cheers

Be it Hammerite or any other paint if the props are ali then you'll need an etch prime. From memory Hammerite cant be painted straight onto ali. But as H says it'll come off no matter what you use.

I've found that a coating of Lanolin over the top helps the flaking of paint (I use International Trilux).

Warm the prop up first and paint some liquid lanolin on.

there's lots of special stuff for this - amongst them Propspeed i put some on and it was yerknow, ok.

However the idea of "protecting" propellors is a bit like "protecting" a pick axe imho - they are v heavy duty, so it they're gonna get damaged a bit of paint makes no difference. If you are racing, you would havem bare and shiny. Cruising seem fine with bare and failry shiny.

dont bother, prop`s are made withstand most uses ie the metals used are suited to the "boaty" enviroment. just like a jcb fork will harden the more it is used or even a hammer is "annealed" to make it harder the more you use it.
prop`s have there own sepcial properties choosen by those who know how to get he best out of a material. unles you deal with JO 90 who will sell you the world then bugger off.
i hope you chose wisely.

I've just finished repairing a friend's outboard and used Hammerite (smoothrite actually, not keen on the hammered finish). They do a "Special metals" primer which includes aluminium.
Didn't paint the prop, didn't see it would improve things.
I'll let you know if it all falls off!

Got severely warned off Hammerite by Steel Developments, Claimed that the flakes of metal in Hammerite that give it the toughness set up electrolytic corrosion with the ally prop.

Since then i've used an epoxy 2-pack which does seem to improve matters
