I coated my wooden rudder last year with a fiberglass matt and epoxy. The epoxy was West systems 207 hardener with white pigment added to give a white finish on the two final coats. This has now gone a light beige colour from UV exposure so I am planning to paint over with a white paint top coat. What surface preparation, paint and if necessary under coat would the forum recommend.

You need to clean the rudder before you give it light sanding with a 200 grit on a small block. Acetone would be good.

Not much will stick to epoxy so after cleaning, sanding and cleaning off the dust you need to apply and epoxy primer.

We use International High Build epoxy primer, you can roll it on and tip off with a good brush.

After curing (@4 hrs min) give it another light sanding as above, you can now apply a 2 pack long chain polyurethane or almost any other coating.

Hope this helps.
