Painting cabin sole

I saw someone paint their cabin sole in 'deck effect' by painting thin off white lines on ply, then using polyurethane floor varnish over the whole lot. The bit i missed was, what sort of paint to use for the white lines?
EDIT- I have found out it was just standard 'off white' emulsion with a top coat of Dulux diamond glaze. I'll post pics if it works!
