Seem to have problems with any kind of paint: Be it varnish, polyurethane, hammerite. No improvement whether I spray, roll, brush.
I always get tiny bubbles which result in a finish closer to sandpaper than anything else. What do I do wrong (obviously a lot). Any good tips and tricks?

Sounds as though you are getting air in the paint when you mix it prior to painting.
It is a good idea to mix paint with a stirrer before use, but you should allow the air bubbles to escape prior to application to the surface. Just noticed this also occurs when you spray? why not get the wife to do the painting but don't forget to tell her what an excellent job she has done works every time.
Painting is like making love if you rush in, paint brush in hand you are not going to get the best results, preparation is the key.
Good Luck

G'day Jjkal,

Tell us a little more and we might be able to point you in the right direction.

What paint type.
What pressure you used.
What type of spray gun.
What tip size.

We can take it from there......

Tried International Varnish, Veneziani Gelpaint, International Polyurethane. Spray, brush, roller, foambrush. Just cant get it right. A few tips and tricks how to do it right with a brush would help me a great deal already.

What sort of roller are you using? Is it one of the cardboard rollers with just about 1/8" of foam? If you try using one with a thick layer of foam you will have problems.

I used to have the same problem. CCScott gave me the best tip for varnishing - Use pure turpentine to keep your brushes in. Brush across the grain first then finish with the grain. I got great results after I took his advice.

Also after loading the brush, don't run the bristles across the top of the pot. Instead pat the side of the pot to get rid of excess paint/varnish. This stops air getting between the bristles.
