I'm in the middle of a vast restoration project on a 45' Classic motor sailer and I'm rather running out of personal steam. I need somebody to help who'd like to spend a month or so painting and varnishing (most of the work remaining is cosmetic) some above decks, some below. I'll happily pay on a "direct" basis but I can't remotely afford boatyard rates.

If you're interested or know of anybody who might be suitable, I'd much appreciate being put in touch. Could suit an itinerant boat-worker or possibly a gap year student. I'd prefer somebody who's done it before but I can teach if necessary.

Poole area. Swinging mooring. Flexible hours (!).

I can't offer a specific contact, but I came across a lady called Maggie (maldon based, I think) who did some really nice work on smacks on the East coast. Might be worth asking through one of the boatyards in that area (Cooks?)

Can't help on the varnishing, I'm afraid, but I see your boat is called Skelgoose. I'm assuming, from your description of her, that she's the boat that was built for a guy called, I think, Skelton - hence her name - at Port Hamble in the '60s. If so, I remember being shown around her as a boy (the owners were acquaintances of my old man), just after she'd been finished. She was gorgeous.

However, I now really feel like an old f@rt, since I can recall, as new, a boat that's now being described as a classic /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

I'm fascinated because we thought that she was built for a Doctor, then Commadore of the Royal Southern. But she was certainly built at Port Hamble in the early sixties and your suggestion might solve the mystery of the name which we have never been able to explain.

Just make you feel younger: I bought a boat that was lying in Port Hamble in 61 (Winona) which was then over 40 yrs old!

I'll ask my old man about her when I next see him - I'm sure he will remember the boat, and may be able to fill in more background information. The RSrnYC link would certainly tie in.
