This year, our (there are five of us) Hillyard restoration project (1932 9-tonner, aft cockpit) has reached the painting and finishing stage. There's a hell of a lot of painting to do, and no matter how careful I am with the masking etc, little spots of grey metallic primer, white deck paint and other glossy paints are getting onto all the nice, varnished wooden bits. Short of sanding those spots down, which is impractical, is there any nifty way to remove these spots of paint. Bear in mind that for the most part, the varnish finish they are sitting on is pretty glassy and smooth... I would be grateful for any suggestions, as in all honesty, these splotches really upset me - although others claim not to notice them.

I would try a fine cutting compound, a light rub over the area might remove the splashes without taking too much off your varnish or affecting the finish. Gotta be worth a try at least!

prevention is better than cure ? Can you cover the brightwork BEFORE you start painting ?

Sounds like bolting hprses and stable doors. Fine wire and brasso, and re-varnish after. BUT, make sure all other paint has dried and there are no painting ops going on. Cover cockpit in wall lining paper - dirt cheap and robust, and you can easily see foreign paint spills.

Keep an eagle eye open, Steffan, when you are doing the painting. As paint flicks off the brush [and rollers are real villains at this] have a damp turpsy rag handy and wipe off the paint straight away. You can even come back after half-an-hour or so and do this, but I think that it's better to get at it ASAP. I'll confess; many years ago I was painting a bunkboard, so I stood it up on end against the cabin side. Now the bunkboard had ventilation holes in it, didn't it? And behind the bunkboard was my newly-varnished pride and joy switch and instrument panel. Oh dear, my mother would not have liked to have heard what I said when I took the bunkboard away!

Keep a drum of industrial wipes or even baby-wipes handy as you paint. These will take off spatters of paint from brightwork if it hasn't gone off completely.
My bugbear is the opposite, varnish spattering onto deck paint no matter how carefull I am.

Right. Thank you all for those tips. Even the one about covering brightwork before painting! I did mask very carefully, but the splashes from thinned-down deck paint were far more villanous than I thought they would be...
