Packing Gland?

Hello,

My shaft is leaking quite a bit so I assume that it is time to change my packing gland (http://www.diybob.com/diyPackingGland.htm). I cannot seem to find any shop that sells it online, does anyone have any experience with buying and installing this?

My shaft is 25mm, volvo pendta md2020 engine, shaft sleeve size 35mm

I also have a 25mm shaft and you will probably need 1/4" stuffing, and bought mine from our local shop http://www.marinechandlery.com/products/10388/700/engine-room/gland-packing.aspx

For changing the gland first once the stuffing box is apart make sure 100% you have removed all the old stuffing, I used a mirror and tooth pick!, BUT try and count the number of old rings you take out so you know how many to put back in.

Make sure you cut the new rings at 45 degrees across, you will probably not get as many rings back in, add them one at a time and 'offset' the joints, when you have as many in as possible fully tighten the nuts back up, then undo them again and you will probably get another ring in.

after installation and adding grease run the engine for say 10 min and check temp of the stuffing box and also watch for leaks, I have found that I usually have to adjust twice, my stuffing box runs fairly hot, enough just about to keep your hand on, but it does not leak at all!

After your first run out check the stuffing box tempreture again and pump down more grease.

Many stuffing boxes run with no grease, water is a far better lubricant and coolant than grease. Grease is a poor conductor of heat and can also block up water ways in any bearings aft of the gland designed for water lubrication and cooling. So don't be concerned if there is no greaser it's not really needed. Packed glands should drip with the shaft running as this ensures there is a water film for lubrication and cooling, but you should be able to adjust the gland so that there is no drip with the shaft stationary.
